Hi Anne, I've had the same experience - I think you're right and that Isabella either did make up her father's name or was told that her father was William Rutherford to cover up her illegitimate birth. I'd be looking for an Isabella Rutherford born to a female Rutherford ca 1846/7 - that's if she didn't fib about her age :-) But where? The fact that none of the birthplaces agrees also suggests Isabella was illegitimate. Scotland seems more likely but then again my gggrandmother consistly gave her place of birth as Leven Dunbarton in every census - turned out she was born in Carnmoney Ireland!
