The record you have found is the following set of Discharge Documents listed in the National Archives' on-line catalogue at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp WO 97/1174/233 SAMUEL FORREST Born CARLUCH, Lanarkshire Served in Garrison Staff Gibraltar; 26th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 41 Covering date gives year of discharge. Covering Dates: 1825 Although this record is on microfilm at Kew, it is also held by the LDS and is available through their Family History Library system. You can therefore order it via their worldwide network of Family History Centres. The FHL catalogue is at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp and the film you want is described as: -------------- Title: Soldiers documents : service documents of soldiers, containing particulars of age, birthplace and trade or occupation on enlistment, a record of service, including any decorations and the reason for discharge to pension, 1760-1872 Author: Great Britain. War Office Notes: Microfilm of original records in the Public Record Office, London. For the period l760-1854 the documents are arranged by regiments, including Militia. WO 97. Volume 1174 Royal Staff Corps; various recruiting staffs: Clarke-Frost, 1760-1854 FHL BRITISH Film 861847 -------------- Notice how the Volume number (1174) in the LDS description and the WO 97 in the LDS film notes match the WO 97/1174 part of the National Archives reference. The last part of the NA reference (233) indicates the position of the record on the film. Alternatively, since you now know the reference of the file (WO 97/1174/233) you should be able to request an estimate from the National Archives to send you a copy. 3. THANK YOU Forrest for the options as to how to get the information on my family member SAMUEL FORREST. I will try the National Archives on line first and see if I can get copies of the papers and if not will order film from local LDS. I noticed the name FORREST ANDERSON and I am just curious as I have an ELIZABETH FORREST who married a DAVID ANDERSON IN 1812 in EDINBURGH. Do you think there might be a connection between our lines? Another question if I might although it is "Navy?" related. I have from the 1851 Census in Devon England my 4x great grandfather shown as BENJAMIN JEWELL 87 FATHER-IN-LAW PAUPER OAT PENSION OF GREENWICK BORN - ASHBURTON I am guessing this actually means OAP of GREENWICH and on his application for poor relief in Ashburton in 1815 he states "then went to Sea and was at Sea or in Newfoundland" Do you think possibly he was in the navy and that he in 1851 was getting an Old Age Pension from them and if so do you know of a way to see if so are there any papers one could get to tell more about his life at sea? I looked him up on the A2A but they only list the SETTLEMENT PAPERS which I already have from the Devon Records Office. Thank you again for responding to my enquiry. Please let me know regarding possible connection of family lines as one never knows when or how a connection might be made. Also any suggestions regarding BENJAMIN JEWELL will be appreciated. My 4 x g-grandparents were Richard MILL and Ann JEWELL married at Bideford 4th May 1796. Was it you Dorothy who made mention of the LITTLEJOHN(S) surname? We have it also, in North Devon. If you think we may have a connection, please contact me off-[this]list. Toni ~ Ontario
