Newtown/Newton is one of the commonest place names in the English speaking world. Which makes it a bit difficult really. There is a big one in Powys, now in Wales, but Powys is a county I think and the boundaries and county names in Wales changed a while back. There is one in Derbyshire, which may once have been in Cheshhire, it is on the Cheshire border. There are lots which are called Newton, but sometimes appear as Newtown. London area is indeed a good place to start looking, since there is link with him having died in Battersea. and the people there will likely know of other places of the same name. I am assuming this is not a Scottish death certificate you have.
