    1. Re: [SCT-EDINBURGH] 1851 CENSUS LOOK UP PLEASE

    3. I had a look at the Scotsman archive which seems to have quite a few references to the exhibition. From this and other references the statues seem to have been set up in sheds, inside the boundaries of the National Monument. My first thought was like yours, that Forrest was producing grave monuments but his main business seems to have been these big set piece sculptures. From the hits on the Scotsman site the statuary was sold off in 1853 - where is it now I wonder? Perhaps if someone has a current sub to the Scotsman Archive they can give us a bit more detail. Putting the words "Robert Forrest statuary" into google brings up a couple of PDFs which give details of the dates of the shed or sheds. This says that Forrest tried to give the statues to the council in.... 1853. This is the same date as the inventory on Scotland's People and most sources seem to agree that Forrest was dead by then. Its an intriguing story, not least because it seems the council battled for years to get rid of the various entertainments up on the hill. It has set me wondering where Forrests own grave might be.
