At the time of my 3xGreatgrandfather, DAVID BENNET's marriage in 1816 his address is given as- BACKWALL, BRISTASORT?/BRISTOSSORT? Parish of CANONGATE, GAVINSLAND, 1st Story. His occupation was a Tobacconist. (Ref OPR Marriages Canongate) I have unsuccessfully used search engines to locate this address and would really appreciate any assistance. Thank you, Barbara
SNIP BACKWALL, BRISTASORT?/BRISTOSSORT? Parish of CANONGATE, GAVINSLAND, 1st Story. His occupation was a Tobacconist. Good morning Barbara It is BACK OF THE WALL Also known as THIEVES WALL or THIEF'S WALL. It was a path which up to 1793 ran outside the FLODDEN WALL ( supposedly since C 1512 ),and lay approx where DRUMMOND STREET is now BRISTOPORT This is the latter day name for what was, up to c1742 , GREYFRIARS or SOCIETY PORT GAVINSLAND. Close to what was BRISTO STREET . Was not an "official" street name only being used by the locals ., possibly after an owner or local merchant etc i.e. near where I live there is a Victorian tenement which has always been known , in my lifetime at least , as " THE BLACK FLATS " after the man who supposedly built them and because they are built of very dark stone . Very roughly you are speaking of an area on a line between DRUMMOND STREET and GEORGE SQUARE Plenty old maps to be found on the Net Regards John
