Jean It could have been the council library on George 1V Bridge which has an "Edinburgh Room" - a wonderful free resource for those researching Edinburgh. On a visit to Edinburgh I found a library/archive that was wonderful. Wish I knew the name, but just stumbled upon it. Found pictures of the church where my ancestors had 2 of their 3 children (perhaps all three) baptized in 1827. Was Trinity College Parish Church. Was demolished for building of Waverly Station on Princes' St near Edinburgh Palace. The ladies were so kind; they made wonderful copies for me which I had framed. Then, in the window of an art gallery on the Royal Mile I found a 100 yr old lithograph of the same church - which I bought. Owner(?) had same surname as mine so gave me a 'cousin' discount. While I have had no luck finding what happened to my ancestors after birth of 3d child (my ancestor) was b. 1830 I do have pictures of their church. By Jan 1840 the children were being adopted by Presbyterian minister & wife near New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. No record located of the parents being in US.
