The area of Edinburgh which is now bordered by Lothian Road (to the east), Fountainbridge (to the south), Semple Street (to the west) and Morrison Street (to the north), was at that time a canal basin called Port Hopetoun, and was the eastern terminus of the Union Canal. The section of Lothian Road on the west side of Port Hopetoun was called Downie Place until 1886. The water flowed into the basin from the west, and passed under a drawbridge in Semple Street. The 1849-53 Ordnance Survey Plan of Edinburgh at http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/edinburgh1056_1.html will show you Port Hopetoun and Downie Place in detail. For a modern street map, see http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=324777&Y=673120&A=Y&Z=1 where the arrow in the middle shows the area in question. >...Daughter of >Alexander FALCONER farmer at Bank Field parish of Newton... Bank Field was towards the north west of the parish of Newton, about 2/3 of the way from Danderhall to Niddrie. It is shown on Gellatly's 1834 "New Map of the Country: 12 miles round Edinburgh" map available at http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/counties.cfm?id=615 On that map, go south from Portobello until you enter Newton parish, and you'll see it marked at the side of the road as "Bank Fd". The road layout is still the same today, and is a shortcut from the Sheriffhall roundabout on the City Bypass to the retail park at Newcraighall. To see the location on a modern map, go to the Ordnance Survey's Get-a-map page at http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm and enter the grid reference NT305709 in the search box at the top left. My gazetteers have oodles of Suttons in England, and a few in Wales and Ireland, but I can't see a single one in Scotland. Any chance you've misread the document, and it's not Sutton but something else? Forrest -- Forrest Anderson, Edinburgh, Scotland.
