    3. Hi Marian While the OPR records (http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/opr-cov.html) state that there is a film of births for Kilmarnock for 177-1801 (597/3), it is a bit worrying that the IGI has no Drummond or McGie born in Kilmarnock for that time, though there are plenty born in Ayr in general. This makes me think that perhaps the record of Kilmarnock births is not very complete for that time. Perhaps someone on the Ayr list would be able to confirm this. If you have no birth records to go on, I think my next step would be to look for MIs for Kilmarnock and go for the possibility that the father of Edward was called Daniel and hope that he was well enough off to have an inscribed grave. Any link to the occupation of merchant may be a clue - again an assumption that Edward may have followed his father's profession. If you find such a grave and it has any reference to children (ie potentially Edward's siblings) the next hope is that you can follow them and see if there are any clues there. Tortuous process I am afraid! Still on the MI route, there is a large gap between Mary born 1811 and Edward 1817. Quite possibly another child(ren) was born and died in that period. If so it might be buried somewhere with an inscription. It could even have been buried with the grandparents in Kilmarnock - I have seen that before. If they owned a family lair then extended family were buried there even if living a distance away. I could have a look at the Kilmarnock MIs next time I am in Edinburgh if you like, or you may find someone on the Ayr list who has that data. Have you looked up any of the Directories of Scottish Settlers 1625 to 1825 by David Dobson? I think there are 7 different volumes and include all sorts of documents not just shipping records, eg contemporary newspapers and official records, etc, with plenty of detail about individual settlers. You are lucky that your ancestor's emigration fits into this time period and there may be something to be gleaned there - unless you have already tried this route? Good luck!
