That's true, and it applies in England & Wales also. I can however share that never knowing my natural father, because my parents were divorced when I was still an infant, just after the end of WW2, I was curious to know when and if he had died. I was in touch with a lady in Canada, in circumstances much as we find here who, having given her my father's name and where he was born, walked into an LDS Center in Canada and immediately pulled the record up there, with a folio number that allowed me to purchase his death certificate.
