    3. Dilemma solved. Thanks for the correction to 1791, it wasn't making sense to be 1870. I haven't got access to any OPRs that early for Edinburgh area but hope someone else does. MegG in OK =======================

    3. Meg, I think you mentioned going to the LDS Family History Center before. The LDS have filmed all the OPR's held at New Register House. You can either use Scotlands People & get a digitised scan or order the film for St Chuthberts containg marriages for that period and read it. I am surprised that it was not on the IGI, most of the marriages indexed from the LDS extraction are on the IGI. There are significant gaps in baptisms though, with some parishes apparently (from the IGI) baptising only males or females, this is because the not all the batches from the original index were loaded into the IGI. It is best if you can get access to the mirofiche index as these are largely complete. I am interested in hearing of examples of omissions from that microfiche index (or even the DOS shell computer index known as "Scotish Church Records), that have subsequently been indexed on Scotlands People. Back to your marriage entry, don't exspect much, most just give the name of the bride & groom, some give the grooms occupation or the brides father, some give names of cautioners, these are usualy family members (but not always) who pay a bond for the banns to be read, which is refunded on the couple marrying. Some records don't even record the marriage date, just that the banns were read on such & such a date and they were lawfully married. cheers John Dods Wellington, New Zealand Proud to be a transcriber for the freeCEN Project and volunteer for Random Acts of Geneological Kindness Ask me how you can contribute to either of these worthy projects or for other ways of helping our hobby.
