Hi, I don't have the MIs but I'm interested that you're looking for the name PHILIP as it must be the first time I've seen it on this board. My direct line is Philip and wonder if we might have any links? If you would like to get in touch we might be able to help each other. Hi Carol and others, A little info - it's been a good while since I posted anything about my Philips... I'll send this to the list in case there are other Philip descendants there! James Philip or Philp, a carpenter in Leith, and Mary Bell, daughter of Alexander Bell a wright of Queensferry, were married 1799, South Leith parish. They had nine children all born in Leith: James b. 1800 (married Elizabeth Broom or Sutherland, moved to Greenock) Janet 1902 Mary 1804 Robert 1806 Robert 1808 Christian 1810 John 1813 (see below) Mary 1817 Andrew 1820 several of the children are buried in South Leith cemetary. John Philip b. 1813 married Catharine Renton in 1832, South Leith. They had several children: Catharine b. 1832 Agnes 1836 Mary Bell 1838 (my g-grandmother, married to William Blain in 1860 in Greenock) Janet 1840 John c1842 James c1844 This family is in the 1841 census in Leith. However they moved to Greenock in the 1840s, as had John's eldest brother James and his family. Both James and John appear to have died at sea - following the family trade as ship carpenters. I don't have much information on the Philip families - aside from my direct line. Have looked for marriages of other siblings but found little. I have some information on Mary Bell, b. 1779 in Echline, who had several siblings. However the family of James Philp or Philip is hard to pin down. I've found a possible family but without proof that I do have the right James Philp. There may however be burials in Calton that would help, and there might, just, be an MI.. it's a long shot but worth trying. (Spellings of Philp, Philip, Phillips are fairly interchangable, and the older records seem to mostly use Philp.)
