    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] BROWN & MILNE FAMILIES OF EDINBURGH

    3. Good afternoon Listers, I have joined the Edinburgh List hoping SKS maybe able to help me regarding a family by the name of Brown (I know, I wish it was some really uncommon name). I am helping a friend to find his grandmother. Bob was born in Edinburgh in 1941 and immigrated to Sydney, Australia in the 1960s. Bob's grandmother was Ann Milne Brown born on 28th May 1885, to John Brown a Butcher's Assistance and Mary Brown (nee Knowles). John Brown was born circa 1858-1860, also in Edinburgh and he had one known sister Ann born 18th May 1865. John Brown Jnr was the son of John Brown and Ann Brown (nee MILNE). John Brown Snr was born circa 1839 to Alexander Brown (born circa 1802 in Edinburgh) and Ann Brown (nee Gammond) (b. circa 1803 in South Leith). Now back to Ann Milne Brown, on 24th December 1909 at the age of 24 she gave birth to a daughter, whom she named Eva Christian Brown. Ann Milne Brown, at this time was living at 86 Grove Street, Edinburgh and at a guess this may have been her parents address. The chappie I am helping to find what happened to his maternal grandmother, had no idea about any of this history, until after the death of his mother in 1994 in Manly, Sydney. The baby was either left with family or friends to raise, as Eva was always known as Brown, so Eva was not adopted. However, when Bob went back to Edinburgh some time back, trying to find the missing pieces, he was told that Ann left Scotland some time after 1810 and immigrated to Canada. I know this is a long shot, however I have my fingers crossed, hoping that maybe a Lister may know something about this family or have them on their family tree and may be able to confirm if Ann Milne Brown did immigrate to Canada, and may know something about her life there. If she married and had a family and if there are any descendants of hers in Canada? One can only hope. Regards, Janice Belrose - Sydney Australia

In fact 2 people in my tree by the name of Moncur were born there in 1920 & 1922 & another one died there in 1982. One idea might be to check the passenger lists for Canada then Census records, then postings on Canadian genealogy messageboards -- David
