    3. Hello Jes The 1851 Scottish census has only 4 males named Charles Gowans, and none of them is old enough to be Catherine's father. However there is a household at 9 Jamaica Street, Edinburgh headed by a Joseph Gowans which includes two children named Charles and Catherine. As follows: Joseph, head, 37, born Edinburgh, shoemaker (master) Catherine, wife, 37, born Edinburgh Sarah, daughter, 13, born Edinburgh, scholar George, son, 11, born Edinburgh, scholar Charles, son, 7, born Edinburgh, scholar Catherine, daughter, 4, born Edinburgh Nicholas, son, 2, born Edinburgh It's possible that Catherine got the names confused on the marriage certificate. It has been known to happen.
