    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] ROBERT MACBETH
    2. Hi I'm new to this list & am hoping someone can help me because I have been stuck on info for Robert my gg.grandfather for some time. The information I have is that he married Ellen Guy in 1854 had my g. grandmother in 1855 & died in 1856. All of this happened in South Shields. His marriage certificate states he is of full age & his father as Alexander Macbeth a soldier. Robert was a merchant seaman. I 'm almost positive i have found Robert on 1841 census working at a castle in Yorkshire. Off the top of my head I cannot remember which one but it states that he was born in Edingburgh. Can anyone tell me how I go about possibly finding his parents to enable me to go back further. According to his death in 1856 he was 33 years old so would have been born approximately 1820's. Any help would be very gratefully received. Sue

    3. Hi Sue It is a great pity that your gg grandfather didn't die in Scotland in 1856 because the death certificate would have given you the names of both parents and the maiden name of his mother. I have had a look on Scotlands People (the Scottish GRO website) and although I couldn't find a birth for a Robert MacBeth in Edinburgh in the 1820s, I did find a Robert McBeath born in Edinburgh in 1819. He was baptised on 23 June 1819 and was the son of Alexander McBeath and Isabella Robertson. I had a look at the image of the baptism and it says: "Alexander McBeath Pensioner late of 93rd Regiment and Isabella Robertson H.S.(?) St Cuthberts P[arish]. A S[on] born 22 Instant N[amed] Robert by Dr Grant". I think Dr Grant may have been the minister who baptised the child. The 93rd Regiment [of Foot] was otherwise known as the Sutherland Highlanders. The term 'Pensioner' in the 19th century usually referred to Chelsea pensioners and the records for those are kept at Kew. There another 2 children for this couple in the Scotlands People index: Helen Spence McBeath born Edinburgh 1828 and John McBeath born Edinburgh 1821. There is also a marriage on the Scotlands People index for Alexander Macbeath and Isobel (sic) Robertson in the Canongate district of Edinburgh in 1812. The image for this and for the baptisms of the other 2 children can be downloaded from Scotlands People (which is a pay site). I will send you the image of Robert's baptism record off-list tomorrow.
