I have an extract of one page of the 1891 Census for Newington, Edinburgh. It is for 23 Salisbury Road, which was apparently a girls' orphanage [not named]. It was founded (1887) and run by a Mary F. H. BELL who was a member of the Order of Poor Clares. Well, she was a rogue member - perhaps an extern sister. The Scottish Catholic Archives, Columba House, 16 Drummond Place, Edinburgh EH3 6PL have been very helpful in supplying background information. For other orphanages - the St Andrews Children's Society, Gillis Centre, 113 Whitehouse Lane, Edinburgh EH9 1BB might have information.
