Hello List ... Ideally I wish someone would claim me or at least make correction or suggestions that might jumpstart me into action on this my only Scottish connections....that I know. Ann[ie] WATSON was born in 1793 in Morayshire, she married John McKAY, St Cuthbert's Church, 1816, Canongate, Edinburgh, SCT. Parents were Alexander and Margaret WATSON. Witnesses at the marriage were ... Alexander WATSON, father, and George McKAY labourer, both of Canongate, Edinburgh. Perhaps George was a brother to John. Walter, [my gg grandfather] born 1820, Alexander, Francis, George and John were the names of following sons of John and Annie ...there was 1 daughter, Isobella born 1817 in the Edinburgh parish. I cannot find anything about her marriage or death. In the 1851 Census for St Cuthbert's, Canongate, Edinburgh, John was 56 years of age and Annie age 58 on same census. I looked both up in the 1851 census BOOK whilst in the 'Edinburgh Room' of the Central Library, Edinburgh, SCT. The 'where born' information for John and Annie was WRITTEN IN ...[John McKAY born] "LAIRGE, SUT"., and for Annie it just had "MORAYSHIRE" for same. Apart from the above information there are some connecting details [in that ] on the Death Certificate of my g g grandfather Walter, [first son of John and Annie] name and occupation for father was JOHN,Type caster, and mother, Annie Watson. The informant was Walter's son, Sydney Walter. John and his sons were Type cast setters/Compositors. None of Walter' sons was a compositor. Looking back over the 1841 census I see that Margaret WATSON, Annie's mother [who was with John and Annie for the census] was age 70. No Alexander mentioned, guess he had died by then. John and Annie were in the 1841 and1851 Census for St Cuthbert's, Canongate, but when I tried for them in the 1861 and 1871 ditto ...there didn't seem to be a census for St Cuthbert's (as such). I ordered in a few census films for surrounding areas [just in case they had moved] with no results. Perhaps they had died in the ensuing years after the 1851 census. My next step is to follow up on sons Alexander,Francis, George and John in the 1881 census. Actually its all a bit of a race against time! The funny thing is that none of my children or grand children is interested in their forbears! I'm banking on them being more interested in 10 years or so .... I'll be long gone but I do want to create a reasonable platform for them to extend. Mary Shortis shortis@spot.com.au
