Hi Judy! The source material is "The Register of Edinburgh Apprentices 1583-1666" by the Scottish Record Society, published in 1906. Carmeban is not referenced in the "Topographical Dictionary of Scotland," nor can I find it in the "Statistical Accounts of Scotland," http://edina.ed.ac.uk/StatAcc/index.html , nor in either of my atlases.
