Hello Judy, Allan, Charlie, et al. Re my efforts over the week-end to access the GRO in an attempt to discover the parents of my great-grandfather William Campbell. Those of you who have been following this saga with bated breath will be as delighted as I am to hear that my efforts have been crowned with some success. I have been able to confirm that William Campbell and Bridget O' Neil were married in Kilmarnock in 1870. My efforts as a novice to obtain this info. might be of interest to others. Not surprisingly, paying my £6.00 for 30 pages was not difficult. The difficulty for me was getting a result. Even when, as a trial, I fed in facts of events about which I already knew, I was unable to get a result. Probably I was doing everything wrong. Eventually. with three pages to go, I stumbled over a William Campbell's marriage in Kilmarnock 1870, but with no details of his spouse. So I turned it around and entered Bridget O' Neil for the same date. This time her spouse was included, and it turned out to be the elusive William. As it seemed fairly certain that these two were my great-grandparents, I have ordered an extract for £10.00 which I hope will give me details of their parents. What a nail-biter! I estimate the cost of obtaining this information at about £20.00 i.e. £16.00 to the GRO, plus 'phone charges. When I receive the extract, I will post the results. Steve
