I have traced the birth of my ggrandfather, William Campbell, back to Cramond 1831, and I am now hoping to obtain the names of his parents. I have discovered that, in Cramond on December 4, Daniel Campbell, married Helen Clephane. Thus the two events would appear to be connected. As a perusal of the 1841 census showed no Campbells whatsoever, it would appear that there were very few Campbells in the village which is another hopeful sign. Since then, my research has shown an entry for May 4th, 1836, stating that Daniel and Helen Campbell had their son, William Campbell, christened at the Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh. This is my problem. The only current reference to Tolbooth, which I have been able to find, has been a planning application dated 1998 to change the Highland Tolbooth Church Assembly Hall, Lawnmarket, to a Festival Hall. Can anyone tell me if the original building still exists, and what denomination it was? Are the parish records available? If I need to look at the 1841 census, which parish or area should I investigate, (assuming that they lived in the vicinity of the church)? This is a tall order. Any help or advice would be much appreciated Steve Morrison
