    3. Hi Steve The Tolbooth Church was in fact one of the three churches into which St Giles was at one time split - High Kirk, Old Kirk and Tolbooth Kirk, all in the same church building! St Giles is, of course, surrounded by the High Street on one side and Parliament Square on the other three. To give you an idea of the extent of the parish, I can do no better than to copy a mail kindly sent to me by Val Wilson some time ago - but I warn you, you'll need a map of Edinburgh and some aspirins! "Think of a box around the centre of Edinburgh. The northern edge is a line from about the foot of the Mound, eastwards through Princes Street gardens and Waverley Station to New Street. The eastern edge then runs down New Street, along the Canongate a small bit and then down St Johns Street. The Southern edge runs from the foot of St Johns street westwards along the Cowgate to the middle of the Grassmarket. The western edge then joins from the Grassmarket, along the top of Castlehill and Ramsay Gardens and eventually joins up with the Mound. Now, there is a centre line through this box that runs west-east from Johnston Terrace, down the Lawnmarket, the High Street and The Canongate. Looking at the area North of this line, the Tolbooth Parish is at the west edge and runs down as far as Bank Street. Next is High Church and it runs down to the North Bridge. Next is Trinity College and this goes down to New Street. Now looking to the South of the line, and starting at the west end again. The first is St Johns and it runs down to George IV bridge. Next is New North (or West St Giles) and it runs down to Hunter Square/Blair Street. Next is Tron Church which goes to about South Grays Close. Finally there is Old Church which runs down to St Johns Street." This Tolbooth Church is distinct from the Highland Tolbooth (formerly St John's, now the Edinburgh Festival HQ) at the top of the Lawnmarket, which used to be Free Church of Scotland (I believe the spire was deliberately made higher than that of any established church, to demonstrate the superiority of the Free Church, which came into being after the Disruption of 1843). Hope this is of some use. Alan
