    3. Dear Edinburgh and Midlothian Listers With the greatly appreciated help of Judy I now know that my ancestor, William Murray BORTHWICK was a Printer and then a Spirit Dealer living at 6 Brown St, Edinburgh from 1823-1826. Could anyone on the list tell me please whether this address still exists, and if so what is there now? Would it be the building the Borthwick family lived in? And my second question - is anyone able to tell me a little more about spirit dealers in Edinburgh in the 1820s? Would WM Borthwick have had a shop, or a hotel? Would he have needed a licence to sell spirits? (In Australia these were needed in the first half of the 19th century & the records are very helpful) I searched for Brown St on the internet tonight and found a sign that I must travel to Scotland! (Well, this is my story and I'm sticking to it.) I found "Edinburgh Flats" in Brown St, right near the Royal Mile and Old town and all the places I must visit in the interests of my family research! I think Edinburgh Flats must be at the other end of Brown St but I'm sure I'm meant to go to Scotland and stay there for a week or two (wistful sighs).
