St Andrews Sq was the terminus for the country buses not the city buses. So you would land there if you came in from eg Biggar orPeebles or even Glasgow. Although the drivers could set you off earlier if you knew where to ask for. This bus station has been undergoing a major restructuring and most of the stances seem to have been moved out into St Andrew Sq itself. A lot of Edinburgh local buses still follow old (often tram) routes and do go along Princes St. But by no means all. And the coverage is not as good as it used to be. In the mid 1980s the buses were 'privatised'. To cut a long story short this stopped "cross subsidy" and left us with a private company where we once had a public bus service. It was no longer possible for revenue generated by the popular routes to be used to support the less busy runs and many of these were cut back dramatically. So you do have to be careful where you stay and be aware that if you choose somewhere off a main route you will find buses are infrequent and may stop in the early evening. On the positive side there is a new day server ticket which gives you the run of the buses for 2 pounds, or one pound fifty if you buy your ticket after 9.30 am and at weekends. Choose your location by mobility. If you dont mind walking long distances your choice is wider, but if you want to enjoy the nightlife or are worried about hills, you need to pick more carefully. Hiring a car is not the best option for most folk since parking is difficult and distances are short. Save it for out of town trips. Best of all is somewhere which gives you both the Princes St buses (15,16, 11 etc) and the ones that go over the top of the volcanic spine of the Old Town and therefore past the National Library, the Central Library, the older bits of Edinburgh University, and the main National Museum (examples are 23, 27 and 45) Hope this helps Judy Copywriter@tesco.net searching BRIGHT, CRUMP, WHITEHEAD, WATKISS, SHORE, HOPE EDWARDS, WRIGHT (all Salop) INSKIP (Salop/Staffs), MARTIN (Staffs), MITCHELL (SCT and CHS/Lancs), SMITH, AITCHISON, THORBURN (all DFS), McRAE (Lewis/L'pool), HOWARTH (Lancs), OLSEN (N'way,L'pool), WESTON (Salop/L'pool), EDWARDS(Flint), and VIGGOR (CHS/L'pool/Salop) > >
