George Willison made a mint as a portraitist in India and London, and retired with the swag to live in Edinburgh. Willison died in April 1797, aged 56, and was buried in Cannongate Kirkyard, having spent the last thirteen or so years of his life painting in his native city. He is said to have had a daughter, Mariann, who married Lt Col Charles MACQUARIE of the Mull family and had by him five children before she died in September 1828.
