    3. I would appreciate learning more about the records held at the registrar's office: Are post 1900 b. m. d. open to the public? Is the set-up similar to that at the Family History Centre in London? In other words, do you look through indexes and then order the actual certificates not really knowing if you have the right one? Or, can you see the actual records? Then, do you order the certificate, get an extract or just copy the information? I understand you have to get there early to "get a seat"? Can you reserve ahead? I am trying to decide if I should hire a researcher, or go there myself when I am in Scotland later in the year. It will probably take a lot of searching to find my BROWN relatives :) Appreciate input / advice from anyone who has researched there. Thanks. Christine, U.S.A.

    3. Chris, Yes, spend a day there!! The records are far in advance of the FRC in London. All the indexes are on computer, searchable very easily and quickly: the OPRs up to 1854, then all registrations from 1855 to about two months before the present,. ALL the certificates from 1855 up to about three years ago are available on microfiche there and then! So you can hopefully make terrific progress in a short time. It costs £17 for the day - but that is only three certificates from England! You can book your seat in advance and really need to be there early to make best use of the day there. Good hunting Stuart.
