That would of course be the Calton Jail, which was demolished between the wars to make way for St Andrews House. Edinburgh Prison then moved to Saughton. (My grandfather started work at Calton just after the First World War, then went on to become Steward at Saughton Jail.) There is a list for those with prison interests: prisons-uk-l-request@rootsweb.com and you might find someone with the knowledge you need. The National Archives of Scotland also have fairly complete registers of prisoners in the Calton between about 1798 and 1874, just in case your John Livingston was not what you hope he was! Good luck Alan >>> "Val Bichener" <bal@cableinet.co.uk> 05/13/01 09:22 >>> I have a marriage notice 4 June 1873 Sowerby marrying Isabella Livingston daughter of late John Livingston of Edinburgh Prison. We assume that he was governor or warden rather than an inmate- not the sort of thing you would mention! Any clues as to where I would find a list of staff and where would it have been? Thanks Val Bichener ______________________________
