Hello All: I am trying to identify my ancestor, Thomas Gibb who was born in Markinch, Fife about 1815-1820 and was a papermaker by trade. On the 1881 census, I found a Thomas Gibb in Penicuik District who I thought might be him - I also found the death registered for a Thomas Gibb in Penicuik Dist. 1886 and ordered a copy of the death certificate hoping it would provide me adequate "evidence" that this was my ancestor. However, I am now more confused than ever. The Thomas Gibb I am looking for gave his age on 1881 census as 67 and birthplace as Markinch and identified himself as a widower. In his household was a daughter Christina 27 who was also born in Markinch. Although her age is a bit "off", this would seem to be my Thomas' youngest daughter, Christina who was born Dec 1850 in Markinch. Also in the household is her husband, JOHN LAIDLAW . I believe this is my Thomas Gibb whose wife Janet Grieve died 1855 in Partick District, Govan Parish June 1855. I have checked IGI and found that there was a Nov 1856 marriage of a Thomas Gibb to Jane Morrison in Barony, Midlothian and that a son Thomas was born to them in 1858, Govan Parish, Lanarkshire. I am wondering if this might not have been a second marriage for "my" Thomas? Would the marriage certificate of Thomas Gibb/Jane Morrison identify him as a widower? The death certificate I have lists this Thomas Gibb with occupation of papermaker, but with the age of 61 and states that he was married to a Jane Morrison. The person providing information was his son in law, ANDREW NAYSMITH. On IGI I found a marriage for Andrew Naysmith to ISABELL GIBB in 1873, Penicuik District. My Thomas also had a daughter by the name of Isabell, so this could still be the correct Thomas, despite the significant age difference listed. Is anyone researching this NAYSMITH family? Or can check the 1881 census index to see if ANDREW NAYSMITH & ISABELL GIBB are listed in Penicuik District and their ages? I realize I'm probably going to have to order the marriage certificates to help identify these people further, but thought I should at least check census records first to see if Isabell's age is close to that of my Thomas' daughter by that name or if she was born after the 1856 marriage of Thomas to Jane/Jean Morrison. My poor Visa card is going into meltdown with all the certificates I've been ordering and I'm hoping to avoid ordering any more right now unless I am reasonably sure they will be of help. Is there by chance an index of the 1871 Census Index for the Penicuik District? If so, would SKS be kind enough to check to see if Thomas GIBB is listed and who was in his household? Many thanks!
