    1. [SCT-EDINBURGH] Margaret TURNBULL, born about 1915
    2. Jean & John Johnston
    3. Hello Edinburgh Listers, In my wife's Gilfillan family, William TURNBULL married Georgina GILFILLAN on 31 Jan 1913 in Leith. They and their daughter Margaret emigrated to Canada in 1923 where sadly, Georgina died only 5 weeks after their arrival, in Chatham, Ontario. I have been trying to trace the daughter Margaret TURNBULL and various records found have birth year as 1915 or 1916, one record (a border crossing from Canada to U.S.A) being birthdate 14 May 1915. I would be grateful if anyone going to New Register House in Edinburgh would please look for Margaret's birth, which could be in Leith, Midlothian, or in Carluke or Glasgow, both in Lanarkshire. Best Wishes to All for a Merry Christmas and a Good New Year, when it comes! John Johnston Gisborne New Zealand

    3. Hi Bev Did Ethel have a middle name? There are 5 marriages on the Scotlands People index for an Ethel Allan (not Allen) in Scotland between 1900 and 1932. I think Allan is the Scottish version of Allen. Ethil Emily Allan m John Tait Watling in Edinburgh in 1916. Ethil Maree Allan m Harry Cummings Gordon in Aberdeen in 1919 Ethel Jane Allan m John Cochrane in Edinburgh in 1923. Ethel Lillian Allan m Alexander Chalmers in Bellshill, Lanarkshire in 1923 Ethil Allan m James Morrison in Aberdeen in 1931. There are 3 marriages for a Harold Allen (not Allan) between 1855 and 1932. all after 1910. They are: Harold Allen m Annie Jeffrey in Dunoon in 1915 Harold Herbert Allen m Margaret Stewart in Pollockshields, Glasgow in 1921 Harold Allen m Agnes Herbison in Glasgow in 1925. There are 5 marriages for a Mabel - 3 for an Allan and 2 for an Allen: Mabel Janey Allan m Thomas Smith in Aberdeen in 1915 Mabel Weston Allan m George Hastings in Edinburgh in 1922 Mabel Rose Allen m Herbert Pettit in Edinburgh in 1926 Mabel Barbara Allan m George Walker in Aberdeen in 1931 Mabel Dorothy Allen m an anonymous spouse in Cummertrees, Dumfries in 1931 There were 20 marriages registered for a Nellie Allan (not Allen) between 1905 and 1932 - too many to list here. If you think any of these sound hopeful, you would be able to view the image of the marriage certificate on Scotlands People, the Scottish GRO website, but it will cost you. A minimum payment of £6 will give you 30 credits of which 1 credit will allow you to see the results of a search, and a further 5 credits to view an image. It pays to be sure before you view. See: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for further details about what is available on the site. Hello List Has anyone a marriage for any of the following people: Mabel ALLEN born 1881 Harold ALLEN born 1882 Ethel ALLEN born 1883 Nellie ALLEN born 1887 They are four of the children of Henry ALLEN who was a wireworker. They were from Bristol, but had also lived in London, and were in Edinburgh in 1901 - so the marriages could have been "anywhere"! I have the marriage of the other daughter in Bristol in 1912, and there is a possible marriage for Ethel in Cardiff the same year, think I will have to send for certifcate to see if that is her! As I know nothing about Scottish research apart from that as far as I know there is no equivalent online to FreeBMD, could someone please tell me if the indexes are in a similar format? I believe these can be searched in person in Edinburgh? Thanks Bev

    3. Hi Paul George Chamber's birth is on the index of birth registrations on Scotlands People. The names of his parents (including mother's maiden name) should be on the birth certificate. Unfortunately the image of the certificate will not be online at Scotlands People until 2011 (at the moment images are available for births up to 1906). But you could order the certificate online via Scotlands People for £10. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Regards Rhoda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Hood" <PaulHood@newmanandbond.co.uk> To: <SCT-EDINBURGH@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2008 12:41 PM Subject: [SCT-EDINBURGH] Leith [Scanned] > Hi All > I am looking for CHAMBERS family of Leith, all I have is George CHAMBERS > b 1909 Leith married Vera INGMAN in Barnsley S Yorks in 1943. > Would be very interested in any information that might fit in with my > CHAMBERS. > Many thanks > Paul > > > <mailto:paulhood@newmanandbond.co.uk> > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > SCT-EDINBURGH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Look here for a description of the building. http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/features/featurelinks287.html This suggests no 8 and 10 are in the same style and no 8 is shown here: http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_street_m/0_street_views_- _nicolson_street.htm Its quite hard to tell from that where no8 ends and no10 begins- the entrances to the upper floors may be side by side. But unless there has been renumbering, this is what the buildings in question look like. Much earlier than one might have thought - I would have said no earlier than 1830s to look at them, and because of the area, but in fact they are 18thC - the pediment would be a clue I suppose. I think this pic is the same area and shows your tenement. http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/pls/portal/canmore.newcandig_p_coll_details? p_arcnumlink=1098197 hope this helps. 3. Hello list! I have just discovered that my Bristol-born ALLEN family were living in Edinburgh in 1901. 10 Nicolson Street Henry John Allen 46 Elizabeth Allen 41 Harold Allen 19 Ethel Allen 17 Nellie Allen 15 Mildred Allen 10 Oldest daughter Mabel was a cook in another household. Has anyone access to a street directory of the period, to narrow down when they moved to Edinburgh (lived in London in 1891 sharing a house with Henry's brother, my greatgrandfather)? Mildred married in Bristol in 1912, and I have found a possible marriage for Ethel in Cardiff the same year - which of course does not mean that either was necessarily living with her parents at the time!! Has anyone any later information on the rest of the family? Or has anyone found someone living in or near 10 Nicolson Street in 1901, who could have known the family? Or has anyone information on the tenement buildings of Nicolson Street at the time? I have Googled but not come up with anything for that period. Thanks!! Bev

    3. I dont think this is the same person. The Ancestry entry you quote looks as if it could be "deputy inspector general of hospitals.....". This seems to be mainly an army job title. There is no matching person in the 1861 Scotland census, but in the 1861 census there is a lodger in High St Portsmouth who fits - William RUTHERFORD age 45 born Ireland (unmarried). The occupation on the image is Dy Inspr Genl of Hospl Army (with appropriate superscription and points) The Deputy Inspector would be a medical doctor. Is there anyone with a copy of the 1871 Census for Edinburgh, who would kindly check an occupation for me and also if he is married, single or widowed. On Ancestry, the occupation has been translated as: Depatz Tacpector General Of Hospital Crowy Allen Cest Ab L William Rutherford born about 1816 Ireland. He is a lodger at 102 Northern Club, Edinburgh. Roll CSSCT1871_159 Registration No. 685/2 ED: 7 Household Schedule 62 Line 13 Thank you. Anne (Bolton, Lancashire)

    3. Don't know Ron I wasn't around then ! When I worked in the Ministry of Pensions in 1958 in Glasgow I was astounded by the number of my neighbours who were unmarried but living together. I had signed the secrecy act so kept my mouth shut. They were all sort of ordinary if not downright ugly and unwholesome.. I thought 'living in sin" was for the young, wild and gorgeous". There we are. If my great grandmother was still married at the time could she simply walk away from that marriage and enter one of the other forms of marriage in Scotland at the time? Was divorce common then? Rather than trying to prove the Georgina Gillespie you found in 1901 was yours, have you tried to disprove it? Also remember "marriage by repute" and "marriage by declearation" were legal forms of marriage in Scotland at this time and neither required to be registered. cheers John Proud to be a transcriber for the freeCEN Project and volunteer for Random Acts of Geneological Kindness Ask me how you can contribute to either of these worthy projects or for other ways of helping our hobby. It could be a transcription error or deliberate on the part of the person involved. If it was someone else who filled in the census they may have been mistaken about her exact age. Anything on a death certificate has been given by the informant. They may ar may not have deliberately omitted some details. Have you found a marriage certificate for her with Burgess and with Gillespie? 3. Hi Ron Further to your email and a message from Jacquie of Winnipeg. Looks like she wasn't officially married to Joseph Gillespie. I have had a quick look in www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and there is a result for a marriage between 1890and 1895 for a John Burgess and a Georgina Spence. I'd have a look at that certificate. In addition "common Law" marriage was not uncommon. See below. Until recently in Scotland, there was a form of common law marriage called 'marriage by cohabitation with habit and repute'. The theory behind this law was that if a man and woman cohabited as husband and wife in Scotland for sufficient time and were generally held and reputed to be husband and wife and were free to marry each other, they would be presumed to have consented to marry each other and if this presumption was not overturned, they would be considered to be legally married. This form of common law marriage has now been abolished by the Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006 which came into force on 4 May 2006.
