Hi Jenny, The information was from Adelaide Proformat who had looked up the 1836-1941 Emigrant Register. It reads as follows: quote: Application Number 4624 Agent : Adamson Date ; 13 April 1839 Name : Stewart Alex Occupation: Shepherd Address: Leith Status Married Age 33 Spouse age 29 Children 2 sons aged 13 and 9, two daus age 11, 7 Embarkation No 3230 The details are for the voyage 39/53 Duchess of Northumberland arr SA 17 Dec 1839 from London. end quote The children were Elizabeth, the oldest girl, Jessy the youngest girl, and Donald was one of the sons, have never found the name of the other son. He is not mentioned with the family in the SA 1841 census, so I'm guessing he must have died sometime in 1840 or 41. Cheers Janine
Hi Alice, Thanks for the info, there's a huge amount of other stuff that's very interesting, but just to let you know I checked out the Directory - no luck, my ancestors had left Scotland by 1839. Sorry Margaret and listers, that email didn't get finished. As I mentioned the SA records aren't forthcoming with info. I don't know what church they belonged to. I'll have to get later certificates of the other kids to see if they have further information. I'm still to locate their graves here in SA. There is only one death of an Alexander Stewart in the registrations 1842 to 1915 and that was at 'Woodlands' which I think is the Glenelg area here is SA. So I'll follow that up and see where it leads. Cheers and thanks Janine.
Hi Margaret Thanks for the info you've provided, it's much appreciated. The South Australian records do not contain a lot of information unfortunately. I have the marriage certificate of daughter Elizabeth to Charles King (1855), but there is no column for parents' names on it. .One Elizabeth (Purvis), I have discounted her because she had a child in 1843 in Edinburgh, the other Elizabeth is a Ferguson her father is named Dugald Ferguson. Without other proof I would not accept this either. The - Church of Scotland - OPR's are on line at Scotlands people. Do you know what church they attended if any ? Do you have any Marriage or Death certificates for any of their children in Australia which may list their mothers maiden name ? or a grave stone inscription anywhere. Hi listers, Have just joined hoping for some help with this brick wall. Alexander Stewart and his wife Elizabeth and their four children immigrated to South Australia as free passengers. They sailed on the Duchess of Northumberland and arrived in SA on 17.12.39. Alexander was supposedly 33 (he had to be under 35 to be accepted) and Elizabeth was supposedly 29. Their children were son 13, daughter 11, son 9 and daughter 7. This makes them very young parents !! Anyway the records here state that he was a Shepherd in Leith however I have been unable to find a marriage for them and being from Western Australia, I'm not even sure I'm looking in the right place. I believe Leith is now part of Edinburgh. Just need some advice please as to where I can find a marriage for these two people, whether there are online records or a transcript agent who could help.. The children's names are Elizabeth, Donald and Jessy. Haven't found the name of the fourth child. Cheers and thanks Janine Halls Creek WA
sorry meant to say 1826 + or - 2 years given the years and ages of the children ----- Original Message ----- From: "janine h" <jhinton@westnet.com.au> To: <sct-edinburgh@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 29, 2008 2:34 PM Subject: Re: [SCT-EDINBURGH] Stewart family of Leith
Also - Janine, you say the record shows he was a shepherd in Leith. This seems a bit unlikely... what is the actual wording of this? I'm speculating that they may have been only briefly in Leith, perhaps to catch the boat to London... Should warn you, however, that given the time of these births in the 1820s and 30s, it's quite possible that they were not recorded. Can you match the ages of the children to their names, as that might help? Thank you Rhoda, this certainly adds to what I have. FYI, David married my maternal grandmother's sister; my mother's aunt. He joined the RANR in 1940 as a Lieutemant and served to 1953 when he was retired as being too old for his then rank. I have his RANR service record where he states his DOB as 29th July 1890, but when being retired he stated it "really was 1894". Looks like he didn't want to leave the service. His marriage certificate dated 15th April 1933 doesn't state DOB but lists age as 40 - suggesting 1893, although this was (poorly) altered at some stage and I can't tell what was originally written. Your information supports a DOB of 1887. A bit of a mystery man. According to family legend he accompanied Col Lawrence on several trips during WWI. I have a newspaper clipping from I think the 1930s supporting this. Once again I thank you for the information, Alan. Hi, Does anyone have a Henry Beaumont (Wine Merchant) and wife Fanny SAXBY in their tree? The couple had a son, David Reid BEAUMONT in 1890 in Edinburgh. From David's date of birth I'd imagine they were born somewhere between 1850 and 1870. Both were deceased before 1933 when David married Vera Elieen HODGES in Sydney, Aust. David is in my tree. Thanks in advance. Alan.
Hello yet again, Alan I was curious about your Fanny because 'SAXBY' is very much an English surname and most unusual for a lassie born in Fife. I had a look for her in the 1881 Census, but couldn't find her. But she was in the 1871 census living with her grandparents in Easter Aberdour Old Manse. Her grandparents were Hugh BLAIK, 61, born Aberdour and Elizabeth FORSYTH, 60, born Aberdour. Hugh was a Road Labourer. For some reason ( and fortunately for you!), Elizabeth was listed under her maiden name. Also living in the house was Thomas Blaik, son, 15, born Aberdour, postboy, and Elizabeth's sister, Margaret Forsyth, aged 63. There was no sign of Fanny's parents but she may have been visiting her grandparents on the night of the census. I then looked for Fanny's birth certificate on Scotlands People but there was none listed under the name Fanny Saxby. However I did find her listed as Fanny Saxby Blaik born on 24th January 1863 in Easter Aberdour. She was illegitimate and born to Agnes Blaik, house servant. The father's name wasn't given but I think it would be safe to say that his surname was Saxby. I looked for Agnes Blaik in the 1861 Scotland Census, and found her aged 20 working as a Laundry Maid in Scone Palace, Perthshire, the home of the Earl of Mansfield, a prominent Scottish aristocrat. The household had numerous servants and included amongst those was a William Saxby, a footman aged 24, born in England. He sounds a likely culprit. I couldn't find him in the 1871 Scotland Census, and unfortunately the 1861 Census didn't specify where in England he was born. I was unable to trace Agnes Blaik after 1861 (couldn't find a marriage or death certificate for her on Scotlands People) nor could I find her as Agnes Blaik on any of the later censuses (including the 1871 England Census). She may have moved south (to England) and got married there, or she may have emigrated. Regards Rhoda p.s. I will send you the image of Fanny's birth certificate off-list.
Hello Alan The 1891 Scotland Census has the following information about the Beaumonts who were living at 5 Abbey Strand, Edinburgh, Canongate. Henry, Head, 30, born Dundonald, Fife, Publican Fanny, wife, 30, born Aberdour, Fife David, son, 4, born Edinburgh Aggie, daughter, 2, born Edinburgh Amelia Russell, servant, 14, born North Berwick, East Lothian. Source: Ancestry.co.uk By looking at the marriage certificate for Henry and Fanny on the Scotlands People website, you should find the names of their parents (including maiden names of mothers), and the occupations of their fathers. See: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (you will need to register (free) but then pay to view. It will cost you a minimum £6 for which you get 30 credits. 1 credit is debited to view the results of a search and a further 5 credits are debited to view an image of a bmd certificate). David's birth certificate should also be available to view. Hope that helps. Thankyou Margaret, Jacquie, and Anne for your help. The Margaret Turnbull birth we are looking for is definitely: 1915 - TURNBULL - MARGARET D GILF born in Carluke Lanark GROS Data Ref: 629/00 0242 I have used Scotlandspeople for many years now and know the restrictions on viewing images online. That is why I am hoping someone going to New Register House would do the lookup. In this case, all I want is the vital birthdate, hopefully 14 May 1915, and address, to confirm other records found. Best wishes, John
