Hello I am seeking information about a Rescue Home in Edinburgh, where in the 1871 census I have found a Catherine STRUTHERS aged 16 born Glasgow.  Does anyone know if there are any records or documents relating to this "establishment", in particular an Admission Register or something like that, and if so, where they are lodged. According to a book called "Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: A Survey of Scottish Topography, Statistical, Biographical, Historical" edited by Francis H. Groome, published in 1882-85, this was a Rescue and Probationary Home for Fallen Women, instituted in 1861, at St. John's Hill. I've been searching for it for some time and it is doubtless in a 'safe place' somewhere (either that or left somewhere, of course). The key word in what you quoted was "unwittingly". However I have still seen messages like that posted on other mailing lists involving Jhoos and when the "sender" was able to get online again they have indicated that they did NOT join Jhoos but their computer was, in fact, infected with a virus. What I'm saying is don't blame Michelle. She is signed up with other Rootsweb mailing lists and is not a spammer. What happens is that a person joins this particular J'hoos site which is a social networking site. Anyone joining such a networking site really does need to make absolutely sure they avoid this - I'm told the instructions don't make it at all clear. The only watertight way to be sure of avoiding such messages on our Mailing Lists is for a List Admin to permanently moderate the List. This would mean you'd only get messages when the List Admin has the time to sit and go through all the messages individually and either agree each one, or reject it. There are already very good safeguards in place to stop normal junk mailings and so I have no wish to stop folk corresponding freely - but sadly I will have to do so if this happens again. In fact these invite messages are harmless albeit very annoying indeed - best to delete unopened and ignore them.
