    3. Lovely. My John Philp's burial entry says: "Philp. John Philp Taylor in Leith aged 57 years died the 1st buried the 4th 1807 in the Taylors gound 2 paces west from Andrew Waugh's headstone." One of your photos shows that headstone! And so, as you were facing west, it includes the area of John Philp's burial, behind the stone. So, next time I am in Leith, I should be able to find it quite easily. This therefore points to the location of the tailors' ground. 3. There are two rows of these bays to the northern side of the kirkyard. "southleith3" shows one of them, which includes the Cowan bay. I dont know any of the history but suspect this is simply a row of burial plots sold around the same time. A kind of upgrade to the usual lair purchase. I dont know what the roof was made of, or even if the thing had a roof. But there is certainly a fair bit of space. There is no close up as such, those are the only pics I took. But I will send you a copy off list and you can see if you can blow it up. I can read the name GRINDLAY as well as COWAN, and what could be 'Lillias HORSBURGH'. I just googled this name and found that someone in NZ is researching the family. 3. I dont know what other info you have but if you are going by the burial entries I would not assume that one partner was buried inside the church. As I am sure you know a burial aisle could be external to the church. I don't think there is an exact definition but it's really like a chapel or small house. I happened to be passing Sth Leith Parish church today and took some pics. I looked at tons of stones but did not see your names. Loads of stones mentioning the craft of the grave occupant. Two very fancy aisles from the 1830s with a family to each bay, but these are to the north. Also lots of the more typical 18thC type of aisles, most of which seemed to be family grounds. If you look at the various maps on the NLS site some of them seem to indicate that the line of aisles/buryingrounds/mausoleums formed a regular border around the southern part of the graveyard. There are two or three large ones sticking out which I think may be amongst those i photographed. Some of the later maps show a smaller kirkyard which looks like the southern part has been built on. Its a bit hard to work out what is where. I think I read that the Taylors were in the church gallery. Yes, there could be burials under the church floor but I dont think you can assume that means that the crafts buried their dead under the floor in their allotted seating area. Under floor burials were in fact quite an issue in the period but there isnt space to go into that here. My hypothesis would be that the Taylors had a burial ground in the form of an aisle and that it has either been built over or otherwise demolished. So with the couple in question you are looking at a difference in wording not location. As for Marion, I take that to mean that they had a second lair backing directly on to the first. I will post a link where people can see the pics as there probably a few people here with links to the parish. I have included a few actual stones, chosen for their quality rather than the names on them, Judy On 7 Feb 2009, at 12:29, J Blain wrote: > Hi Judy, > > It would indeed be 'aisle' but signifying an area in the kirk - > apparently the various craft incorporations all had their areas for > seating and some burials were under the floor. 3. Thank you for your reply Sheila. I have searched for Annie and Ethel's deaths on Scotlandspeople but can not find them. It is frustrating that we cannot look up marriages later than 1930, although we can look up births and deaths. Can anyone recommend a magazine or newspaper where I may be able to put a notice in the hope that Annie or Ethel's families or friends may see it? In the past I have seen some publications that have a Contact section. 3. Hi all, I"ve found some interesting things about my Philip and Cunningham people in the South Leith burials. Alas, I only have information up to 1807, and am looking for more between that and 1854. In particular, there was a James Philip, carpenter, who died after 1819 - I don't know the date though. Is there anybody who has access to the burial records, who could help with this, as it may be a looong time before I have access to the later ones? Some interesting things in the earlier ones: I have: the burial of Thomas Philp, tailor, in 1772 in the tailors' ground 'near the road'. His widow Margaret Imrie in February 1776 in 'middle of the Taylors Isle' (not 'ground'); and her granddaughter Katherine Philp (daughter of her son John) also buried there in February 1776. A young sister-in-law of John Philp (son of the above) in the tailors' ground in 1779. A young child, George Philp, son of John Philp tailor, in the tailors' ground in 1794. Marion Cunningham, wife of John Philip tailor in Leith in January 1803, buried 'in the Taylors ground, South East side of his own headstone'. And finally, John Philp, tailor, in the tailor's ground in 1807. [But what do the words in Marion's record, 'South East side of his own headstone', mean? Might it be that John Philp had erected a headstone on the death of his son, or for his parents? If so, it's either gone now or illegible, as there are no Philp or Philip inscriptions recorded in MIs that would match this. Ah well, yet another puzzle!] Jenny

    3. I have a mystery Sam BOSTOCK in my tree. He was married to my gt grandmothers sister, Elizabeth WESTON at St Marys Kirkdale (Liverpool) in 1878 and in the 1881 census gives his POB as Scotland, age 27 (ie born around 1854). He was a boiler maker. According to family stories he also won over another WESTON sister with his charms, leading to the birth of a baby girl. In a further story, he is supposed to have died on the Lusitania, but there is no record of that. It seem more likely he died on the Franconia a bit later. Or in his bed. I have nothing on him record- wise beyond his marriage and the 1881 census entry.
