THE PHK !!! The PHK is a book written by PHK McComb(Peter Hathaway Kemper McComb) and Virginia McComb between c.1912-1942. My grandfathers generation is the last to be listed.(1920's) It has a descendency line all the way back too John McComy Mor and wife Janet Rattray given Charter at Abotshall, about 1568 . It says that Thomas, fifth son of Ian Mor, OR Thomas, son of William, grandson of Donald, son of Iain Mor of Forter, migrated through Antrim Ireland before 1732 with 2 sons, registered as Bl---k(2) McComb. He had 4 sons total. James,John,William and Robert. I am a descendent of Robert. Bl---k(2) had one brother, ? McCombie, who had one son John taking the name Macomb. John Macomb had two sons and one daughter. He came to America in about 1755 with his wife Jane Gordon and their 3 children.Alexander,William and Ann. They had resided in Dunturkey,Ballynure,Antrim County, Ireland from1685-1755. Cousins to the McCombs (Bl---k)(2) that came earlier. The PHK also states this perticular Thomas who is registered as "Bl---K(2) McComb" and his brother "? McCombie," their father is known as "William" and grandfather "Sir Thomas." What "Sir Thomas" it is referring to I dont think anyone knows. Im not sure if Donald would have been old enough to be a grandfather at that time.(1685). That only leaves Thomas the 9th chief. The McComb book states that his parents were John McCombie and Elspet Campbell of Forter, "BUT" there were other John McCombies and Elspet Campbell's as well which I have marriage records of all (Ancestry.com)if they are accurate. There were about 70+ or so Elspet Campbell's, about the right time(1685) a few married to a John McComie(bie), one being (Ian Mor) John McComie of Forter. (I must keep that in mind). Also he has used many different names, besides the Gailic versions like Iain Mor, hes often shown as John Macintosh, John McComie, John McCombie, John McComy Mor and a few others. I'm sure all the men had a few spellings back then. Spelling wasn't one of their biggest concerns. In the PHK, if you look at Alexander, "Iain Mor's father",the 7th chief, his other name is also Bl---k(1). That might add to the conclusion. Bl---k(2) McComb (my chain) came to America through Delaware, Maryland before 1732 with a few of his sons. After some more shipments came (cousins etc)we then spread out, one place being McCombs Fort.(Penn,New York, Virginia) First there were Indians, then the Revolutionary War, then the Indians again, then the Civil War, then the Indians again. They were true Pilgrims! Some going into early Congressional and other early government military positions I sent along a link to a partial copy of the PHK and the Gustin book, along with 7 other Macomb files so you can check it out. It is in no way a full copy of the PHK but it still has some jewels. "The Ancestry of John S. Gustin" is also great. You will need Acrobat Reader or Word to read them. I dont think my friend will mind. There is also more updated info after these files. This website belongs too my friend Murray McCombs. <A HREF="http://www.interlog.com/~mmccombs/McCPDF/McCPDF.html">McComb PDF </A> <---AOL users http://www.interlog.com/~mmccombs/McCPDF/McCPDF.html The PHK has never been proven, actually proven. Its credability is being challenged by myself and some others. The meat of the argument is the arrival dates into America. An early US Census about 1735, shows them about 40 heads or so. From that point it seems accurate. When they arrived and prior to the arrivals, which it states the Chieftains family is also questionable. Its main objective is too inspire further search on the McComb surname, wich can be from from several different clans. MacKintosh/McColm/McComb-MacKintosh/MacThomas/McComb(bie)-MacAllum/Malcolm/McC omb and a few others I believe. Any more please correct me. Campbell and Gunn are possibilities I have read somewhere as well " I believe". Any leads in my direction please send my way. Nothing is trying to be proven by this register. Hopefully the validity of it can still proven through further search. Jeff McComb- Southern California - Clan MacThomas Society Member

Hello Listers, I have hesitated to send this out to the lists but at the same time I feel it just might be that very hammer needed to knock down a few brick walls. I found this site through Cyndi's List, a fine site a must say. It say's and I quote "a searchable online database of burials", perhaps there is someone out there who can elaborate on this. The following link should take you directly to the Data Base Search Page, I have found it very hard to find but very easy to use and so far it has given me a probable direct line of fire on a very elusive ancestor who was killed in the Boer War, good luck to all. http://www.nationalmonuments.co.za/search.htm -- Richard of Abbotsford, Remember that overnight success usually takes about fifteen years. For Joe Boyd Williams Hi Joe Through the 1800 s the Church of Scotland had at least one major breaking apart as the congregations gained more say in the appointment of ministers . However the General Assembly rules over all. In the Congregational church each church is self ruling and appoints its own minister. However add in the law - births and marriages had to be recorded in the established church. So, on my great grandfather's marriage certificate it says "Banns .. having been three several times duly and regularly Proclaimed in the Parish Church of St Cuthberts this twentieth day of March 1876 ........ That the above named parties were this day married by me is certified at (date again) Alex D. Robertson Minister of Sydney Hall Congregational Church So marriages had to be proclaimed in the parish church even though the parties were Congregationalists. I don't know what happened to Sydney Hall but the family moved on to Bristo Congregational Church in Bristo Place. Later this was sold to the Seventh Day Adventists and Bristo combined with Augustine in George IV Bridge. It's now Augustine United Church. (There in 1957 I was married) Bristo Church was only a little bit past the South end of George IV Bridge. Augustine is in the middle. If you go past the other end you come to the top of the Mound and look over Princes St. On the far left at the West End is St. Cuthberts. Bristo to Augustine - barely 5 minutes walk. Augustine to St Cuthberts - 25 minutes. I think New North is over the other side of Princes St and down the hill a bit (another 15 minutes walk) Before 1900 they had cable cars and horse buses. 1816 my ggg grandfather was married in St Cuthberts. I don't think there were any Congregational Churches. Your 1826 is the earliest ref to Bristo I've heard. Jim McArthur
Hallo Everybody, Does anyone on the list have advice on where to start with my Kennedy request. He was in the Royal Artillery in WW1, and lived in Edinburgh after the first war in Tenement accommodation. He had a son, name not known, who was in the Royal Sutherland Highlanders and was decorated in WW2, he was apparently nearly buried alive but just "woke" up before they covered him up. Michael Kennedy Senior came to Scotland from Ireland around 1900. Any advice please. Pat Sheldon.
Greetings in this great new year! In my endless quest for my Flynn family I am wondering, if I could obtain the record of death on Francis Flynn, would it give me his place of birth in Ireland? His marriage record in 1863 listed his age as 21 & the 1881 census concurs with this, but only states Ireland as birth, no county. Has anyone looked at a death record for someone born in Ireland, but died in Scotland. If it won't list his exact county of birth I don't want to pursue this route because I don't have a date of death & it will take a lot of work which I can use elsewhere. He lived many years in Musselburgh, Parish of Inveresk & I believe still alive in 1908. Thanks in advance, Georgia in California

Good evening to you. I would like to introduce myself as a new list member - my name is Averil from Sydney, Australia. I have been searching my fathers lineage...Sykes, Barbier, Astori..from Cheshire to Italy, Egypt, Sudan & India....quite unsuccessfully let me add (but I keep at it!!) I have just been reading over my mothers history.........interesting to say the least! If anyone can recognise names,I would be very interested to hear from you. I have found a piece of paper that my grandfather wrote stating Scottish surnames : Aitchison or Aitcheson - 'son of Adam': Cleghorn - of local origin from Cleghorn in Lanarkshire: Elder - refers to elder in age: NcCrar - variant of MacCrae, Ayrchire form of McRae: Nairn or Nairne - of local origin of Nairn. Our Aitchisons (as were most of the others?) from Edinburgh. Known to be Brewers & Distillers. The Elders "with the beginning of the New Town in 1767 including the establishment of Princes Street (where John Elder's bookshop was in the 1840's)" ventured out to Australia early 1800's then back again..well, most of them. My grandfathers paper list "Edinburgh ancestors were Burgesses of Edinburgh. The Scottish burghs, dating from at least the 12th century, were merchants and craftsmen - 1761-1841."............this is far too much for me to absorb considering that I have been trying to find my fathers grandfathers' death certificate for nearly 6 months...and he died in 1926!!! However, I have an enormous amount of material at hand and between my mother and myself............hope to put the lot together in 2001 and lodge them with your kind selves very soon. In the meantime........if you can lay claim to the above names we would be absolutely delighted to hear from you. IF....at any stage...you come across the name BULKA...........this is a real mercy mission.......PLEASE don't forget this name.........my friend has spent 40 years researching it with very little result!!! Bye for now from sunny Sydney...........Averil I
For James Hall Yes. The Duddingston Parish Register lists all the baptisms from about 1600 (nearly unreadable) to about 1850. I had to send for a second film to get the marriages. If Robert Fuller is there you should be able to find him in the index to Old Parish Registers kept on both fiche and CD at your local Mormon (LDS) church. 250 years of parish registers takes a lot of reading. It's important to use the index and look in the right place. I read big chunks of this one. With luck you may find a long stretch of family tree. I found that some of the related marriages were in Canongate or St. Cuthberts parishes making the index even more important. Jim McArthur
My gg grandparents James Clark and Isobella Brown were married at New North Parish, Edinburgh March 17, 1823. Their second son Daniel Clark was christened January 1826 in the Bristo Congregational Church. Daniel later was married to Jane Maxwell Purdon on June 7, 1847 in St. Cuthburts Church. My questions are: 1. In what proximity are the churches located in Edinburgh? 2. What religions were the different churches? 3. Was it common practice to change religions? The entire family including Daniel's younger sister, my g grandmother Jean Brown Clark helped found an Episcopal Church after arriving in Texas about 1855. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thank you in advance. Joe Boyd Williams Katy, Texas
Hello All, I have subscribed to this list as I have just found out my Gr Gr Grandfather Robert FULLER may have been born in Doddin(g)ston, Edinburgh could anyone tell me if the baptism records for this area have survived? A Robert FULLER joined the Royal Artillery in Edinburgh on the 20th July 1826 he gave his age as 20 his birthplace as Doddinston and his occupation was Shoemaker. If the records still survive and someone could do a look up of these records for a baptism c1806. I could reciprocate with a lookup at Tyne & Wear Archives in Newcastle if needed. Thank you Margaret Hall Wallsend
