Anyone out there with connections to Bellevue High School around 1942/45?
I am no expert, but it seems to me that most large banks or those banks affiliated with a large bank could convert your dollars into pounds or punts and then be able to sell you a money order for that amount. I believe American Express also has a similar service. Have you tried to see if Visa is acceptable. I spent a month in the UK last year and only a few out of the way places did not accept Visa. ==== SCT-EDINBURGH Mailing List ==== >To unsubscribe from list mode, send a new email to sct-edinburgh-l-request@rootsweb.com and put the word unsubscribe in the message box. Hello All !! Looking for a John McCombie with wife Elspeth Campbell, approximately the year 1685 at the birth of Bl--k McComb and a twin brother ?? McCombie. As documented, it would sound simple to conclude that they are the John and Elspeth of Forter but this is impossible !! for "that" John died 9 years before these twins birth. Strangly enough I have found another John McCombie b.1661 Antrim Ireland, also haveing a wife by the name of Elspeth Campbell, and also haveing the same cildren Bl--k McComb and ?? McCombie. I have 2 different documents, 2 different John McCombie and Elspeth Campbells, both saying that they are the parents of the disputed children"Bl--k McComb and ?? McCombie, so where do I go from here ? There is a tradition that the frase "Bl--k" stands for Black and this perticular persons real name was Thomas. Thank You !! Perhaps this is the parish of Abercorn in the county of Linlithgow (West Lothian)? A look at the 1881 census and her birth certificate should give lots of information. I sent a US international post office money order last year - very unsatisfactory. You pay the local post office the US dollar amount you want to send, they send the request to St. Louis, Mo., and from there it went to a bank that converted the money to pounds stirling, who in turn mailed it. I started this process in Pennsylvania and the last postmark on the envelope was Gibraltar before it's final destination in Scotland. If i remember correctly, it took about 12 weeks. Cathy
Can someone please tell me where the lair registers of Greyfriars Chuch Yard are held and whether they were maintained up to 1859. Friends: I need your wisdom ... I want to purchase international money orders. A few years ago I used Ruesch International. I recently called them to discover the service charge per order has gone up from $2.00 to $15.00. Ouch. Surely there is a better alternative. Suggestions? Who do you use? Thanks. Blessings, Malcolm San Antonio, Texas
Just sent an international money order to Britain using Canadian postal service. Cost was $4.50. I believe in the US an international postal money order costs $8.50. Joan
Gerry, You might be looking for Abercorn listed as a village and coastal parish on Linlithgowshire, now West Lothian. I could not bring up the name Carrighan on the 1881 census or the Vital Records Index. Are you sure of the spelling of the last name? Joan Vancouver Island (born in Port Arthur ON)
This is my first posting to this list as I am hoping to get information about a relative and the geography. Eliza CARRIGHAN was born in July, 1879, in Lawflat, Abercom, Scotland, County of Lintetttgon (this is what I believe was on an old paper). Would SKS contact me to explain if I have the right geographical location along with any hints that might help me in my search to document her history. Thanks Gerry Bell, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada.

Sincere thanks to Lynne Leggett for the listing of the Edinburgh and Leith County Directory names. There is a James BRYDON listed as a wright for Penecuick. Could SKS with access to the 1841 and 1851 census please check to see if he is listed with any family? I'm looking for a William, born in 1836 who may be a son? Many thanks, Cindy O.
Hi listers, I have added the district of Winchburgh to the web site which now finishes off the 1842/1843 County Directory of the Edinburgh & Leith Directory. The following parishes are included: Balerno, Colinton, Corstorphine, Cramond, Currie, Dalkeith, Ford, Hermiston, Kirkliston, Kirknewton, Lasswade, Liberton, Loanhead, Musselburgh, Pennycuick, Portobello & Duddingston, Prestonpans & Cockenzie, Ratho, Roslin, Slateford, Tranent, Uphall & Winchburgh. There are now a few thousand names on the site so you may want to use the search engine on the main page. Good luck, Lynne ************************* Parish of Corstorphine Web Page http://www.angelfire.com/ct2/corstorphine/ 1842/1843 Edinburgh & Leith County Directory http://www.angelfire.com/ct2/corstorphine/Edinburgh&Leith.html
Hello All: I am trying to identify my ancestor, Thomas Gibb who was born in Markinch, Fife about 1815-1820 and was a papermaker by trade. On the 1881 census, I found a Thomas Gibb in Penicuik District who I thought might be him - I also found the death registered for a Thomas Gibb in Penicuik Dist. 1886 and ordered a copy of the death certificate hoping it would provide me adequate "evidence" that this was my ancestor. However, I am now more confused than ever. The Thomas Gibb I am looking for gave his age on 1881 census as 67 and birthplace as Markinch and identified himself as a widower. In his household was a daughter Christina 27 who was also born in Markinch. Although her age is a bit "off", this would seem to be my Thomas' youngest daughter, Christina who was born Dec 1850 in Markinch. Also in the household is her husband, JOHN LAIDLAW . I believe this is my Thomas Gibb whose wife Janet Grieve died 1855 in Partick District, Govan Parish June 1855. I have checked IGI and found that there was a Nov 1856 marriage of a Thomas Gibb to Jane Morrison in Barony, Midlothian and that a son Thomas was born to them in 1858, Govan Parish, Lanarkshire. I am wondering if this might not have been a second marriage for "my" Thomas? Would the marriage certificate of Thomas Gibb/Jane Morrison identify him as a widower? The death certificate I have lists this Thomas Gibb with occupation of papermaker, but with the age of 61 and states that he was married to a Jane Morrison. The person providing information was his son in law, ANDREW NAYSMITH. On IGI I found a marriage for Andrew Naysmith to ISABELL GIBB in 1873, Penicuik District. My Thomas also had a daughter by the name of Isabell, so this could still be the correct Thomas, despite the significant age difference listed. Is anyone researching this NAYSMITH family? Or can check the 1881 census index to see if ANDREW NAYSMITH & ISABELL GIBB are listed in Penicuik District and their ages? I realize I'm probably going to have to order the marriage certificates to help identify these people further, but thought I should at least check census records first to see if Isabell's age is close to that of my Thomas' daughter by that name or if she was born after the 1856 marriage of Thomas to Jane/Jean Morrison. My poor Visa card is going into meltdown with all the certificates I've been ordering and I'm hoping to avoid ordering any more right now unless I am reasonably sure they will be of help. Is there by chance an index of the 1871 Census Index for the Penicuik District? If so, would SKS be kind enough to check to see if Thomas GIBB is listed and who was in his household? Many thanks! LaVerne Markart (USA)
Cindy I think I know where the names can be found. My grandmother, born 1881, was growing up in Edinburgh at the time. She said that every week there were injuries or deaths in the paper. The Edinburgh Evening News is on micro-film. I saw it in the Edinburgh room of the Edinburgh public library but I believe it is available in some other libraries. Jim McArthur
Hi Margaret Two possibilities, either for help or a pointer in the right direction- (i) Edinburgh University Development and Alumni Services- Development@ed.ac.uk I don't think they're into historical information but they just might help. (ii) I think the Scottish Genealogy society has material on medical graduates www.scotsgenealogy.com (They like you to be a member but..!) Jim McArthur
