Dear All, Looking for help with the following--- Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory for 1904/1905 information on the following--- the Rev. Arthur Felton Still Hill who was attached to the Cathedral in Edinburgh from ? till 1920 Thank you in advance, Margaret (in OZ)
Margaret, If it helps at all, my Edinburgh Almanac for 1907 (not a directory but does have clergymen listed) has A F Still Hill as attached to Lasswade, St Leonard's. It also says he was ordained in 1877. Hi Margaret, In the 1904-5 Edinburgh Directory, specifically the Churcg section, there is no clergyman called Hill listed. There are two cathedrals in Edinburgh, Roman Catholic and Episcopal, plus the High Kirk of St Giles (Church of Scotland) often called St Giles Cathedral. If you could find which church he belonged to, perhaps their records of clergy would be of some help. Stuart. Hi Ruth, We've spoken before but never could work out if there was a connection. With this new information I can tell you there is! John Lessels & Mary Cairnie are my 4th g-grandparents. I have also spoken to Aird McIntyre but I think I may have given him the information about Geils Hendersone as I seem to remember he said he couldn't prove the connection (the information was passed to me by a researcher many years ago). I didn't know about Isobel Arnot or Janet Galloway so I'll add them to my list. Can you give me some more info on James the cabinet maker? I don't have him listed as being a child of John/Elizabeth Hamilton Murray. I think I have more info somewhere on John the architect as I have been in contact with a gentleman who is a direct descendant of him, if you would like me to look it out. To let you know where I fit in, John & Mary Cairnie's son Thomas b. 7 Mar 1790 married Janet Fotheringham 27 July 1811. Their son Thomas b. 9 Jan 1834 married Elizabeth Spence 25 June 1858. Their son Thomas b. 9 Apr 1859 married Elizabeth Mossman Darney 25 Mar 1890 in Newhaven, Edinburgh. Their daughter Elizabeth Clark Lessels was my grandmother. Dear Listers, I am knew to this list and would like to post an interest. I am researching my paternal great-grandmother Elizabeth Ellen HAY born in Edinburgh in either 1847 or 1855 (depending on the source you pick!) or somewhere in between!!!!. She married William FARROW in 1874 in Essex. Her father was James HAY. I have not been able to find any details on FreeBMD or the on-line IGI and I would very much appreciate if someone could tell me the best way of pursuing this. Also, I would love to find out if anybody else is researching this HAY family and to find some connections. Regards, Helen, West Sussex, UK

I recently found my missing 'cabinet maker' James LESSELS, about whom I have been whimpering for nearly 2 years. (Directly due to a wonderful researcher, reasonable and efficient.) All my tribe hail from Fife - Abbotshall mainly, but also nearby parishes of Dysart, Kinghorn, and later in Dunfermline and Edinburgh. I'm 'proved' back to: John Lessels who married Mary CAIRNIE in 1783, and a distant relative Aird McIntyre, has traced the line back to Andrew LESLIE who was married to Elizabeth MOORHEAD about 1676 in Abbotshall. Is there anyone on the list who might be related? Ladies who married 'John Lessels' - (one in every generation!) include: Elizabeth MOORHEAD c. 1676 Geils HENDERSON c. 1703 Margaret WATT c. 1731 Isabel ARNOT c. 1752, she died so he married again - Christian GRAY 1760 Mary CAIRNIE 1783, she died so he married again - Janet GALLOWAY c. 1801 Elizabeth Hamilton MURRAY 1804 - 'the' John from this marriage was an architect in Edinburgh, and 'my' James' big brother. James' son John, my great Grandfather, moved to England. Hope to hear from 'cousins'. Are there any DUNCAN'S or BRYDENS currently living in Edinburgh and Leith? - Margaret Josephine Lessels married William Stewart DUNCAN, and their daughter married Robert Bryden in 1870. Ruth in Birmingham, England.
To The Computer Users I experienced a problem downloading and using a IGI Gedcom file from Family Search LDS to add to our Paf5 program, Downloaded the file and could not open same, tried various programs to open it and did not succeed. In the end found a way! After clicking the Download button on the "IGI Family Search" page the "File Download Dialog" box comes up and I found if you click on the radio dot for "Open this File from it's Current Location" then click on the "OK" and after this you will have the "File Download Dialog Box" reappear and then you Click on the radio dot for "Save to Disk" click on "OK" then proceed to your Folder or Desktop to complete the Download. I found then the file was in a Gedcom Format and was able to enter same into the program! Certainly I am using programs of WinME, Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5, and Paf5 . Hi list, I found a certificate in the front of my grandmothers bible issued by the Edinburgh School Board in 1903-04. My grandmother was presented the certificate as a reward for "Progress in Cooking and Needlework" by St. Bernard's Evening School. Flora C. Stevenson was Chairman of the Board and it was signed by Henry G Sim, Head teacher. Does anyone know if this school still exists and exactly where it is? Any info would be appreciated. Cheers, Gail
