    1. [EDB] Problem
    2. Tom McNairney
    3. Hello Can anyone suggest why two children should be given their mother's surname when the parents were married in the late 1880's? Both of them were born within three years of the marriage, the boy seems to have his father's Christian name and then his father's surname as a middle name, the girl has her mother's Christian name and then her father's surname as a middle name. Later they are both shown in the 1891 census living with their maternal grandmother and family. (Mum is nowhere to be seen at least under her maiden name) The family is not all that flash for it to have seemed very desirable to keep the mother's surname above the father's. So why? The only other clue would be that the family seems to have moved around the Lothian's more than their kith and kin. I am probably thick and not come to the obvious answer, but for the life of me I cannot understand why. Regards Tom McNairney

    3. Chris, The only directory I have for the period is 1884-5 and there is no William Norrie listed either alphabetically or in Abercrombie Place. The Edinburgh Room at Edinburgh Central Library, George IV Bridge, may be willing to look up other years, or even have more information on your William is he was well known. Stuart. 3. Does anyone have access to, or tell me where I might find, Edinburgh Post Office or other directories for some years between 1878 and about 1890? I am trying to learn more about William NORRIE and his career, and pinpoint when he emigrated to South Africa. It appears he left before the 1891 census. William was a teacher, and was living in Abercromby Place, St. Mary's, in 1881 census. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Chris, U.S.A.

    3. I am new to this list. I am helping a friend research his family the Dobsons. Early in the 1800's Adam Dobson emigrated to Canada from Inverleith Scotland. In Scotland, his family had operated a woollen mill. Adam operated a woollen mill in either Beaverton or Cannington, Ontario, Canada after he emigrated. Would appreciate any assistance re: Dobsons of Inverleith. Margaret

    2. J A Olsen
    3. Ann (and list) did you find out who was researching the DONALDSONs as in DONALDSONS Hospital? DONALDSON himself lived in a mansion called Broughton Hall (not to be confused with Broughton House). Nothing like as grand as the hospital but a typical 18thc gentleman's residence, at the time more or less in the country. It has now disappeared under housing, but there are engravings of it. The history of that little nook of Edinburgh is fascinating and I may have some bits and bobs lurking on the hard drive for anyone who is interested.
