    1. [EDB] New Register House
    2. Chris Draisey
    3. I would appreciate learning more about the records held at the registrar's office: Are post 1900 b. m. d. open to the public? Is the set-up similar to that at the Family History Centre in London? In other words, do you look through indexes and then order the actual certificates not really knowing if you have the right one? Or, can you see the actual records? Then, do you order the certificate, get an extract or just copy the information? I understand you have to get there early to "get a seat"? Can you reserve ahead? I am trying to decide if I should hire a researcher, or go there myself when I am in Scotland later in the year. It will probably take a lot of searching to find my BROWN relatives :) Appreciate input / advice from anyone who has researched there. Thanks. Christine, U.S.A.

    1. [EDB] MI LOOK UP NEWINGTON & GRANGE CEMS
    2. Don Brunton
    3. William Brunton my great grandfather died at Cumin Place, Edinburgh on 8 November 1883, aged 83. It is possible he and his wife Catherine nee MacNaughton are buried in either Newington Cemetery or Grange Cemetery. Is there a SKS who can tell me if these cemeteries have been transcribed and if they have been, could SKS do a look up for me please or tell me where I can view the MI's. In addition, Edinburgh City Council's website seems to be pretty 'light on' with email addresses, could SKS advise me if the Environment and Consumer Services Department can be contacted by email. All information needed for my visit to Edinburgh on 24 May for 4-5 days Many thanks Donald C Brunton Sydney Australia

    2. Agnes Gamble
    3. Hi Listers, I wonder if SKS would mind looking up the 1851 Old Town printed Index - if they have access to it - for a husband and wife, John and Margaret Brown ages between 20 and 40, John was a Stableman. Their daughter Margaret was b.1851 in Edinburgh but may have missed the census date, and I don't know if she was the first or last in the family. I photocopied the "BROWNS" from the New Town Index but can't see my Browns there, however if I can help anyone else with "BROWNS" in Edinburgh at this time, I'll have a look for you. Many thanks. Agnes

    1. [EDB] "McComb", originations and variations
    2. Hello I am researching the name "McComb" and all its variations and origination's. Its heavily documented as a part (clan)(family)(branch) of Mackintosh.<-- ref. Memoir of the Families of Mcombie and Thoms c. 1887 Edinburgh. This Mackintosh connection can go in a few different directions. The Memoir takes alot of references from historian, A.M. MacKIntosh, and alot of other Mackintosh resources, books, researchers, etc. Well, even with all this documented stuff, " with Scottish history ", it can still go in "all kinds" of different directions. We are also seeing McCombs in other clans such as Stewart,Gordon, Campbell, McHone, Malcolm, just to name a few. I dont know if they are all of the same clan that was slowly split and attached themselves with other clans, through the 1600s, or if they are different "McCombs" with different clans altogether. Sometimes it seems they had a clan of their "own"(<-ref,- R.F. PYE) research on this separate McColm clan. This perticular clan branched off of the Mackintoshes in the early 1400s about the same time as the first Thomas ->later "MacThomas". Im not sure if this is the possible "Southern MacThomas" branch or not. We are looking for info that might counter this "MacKintosh" conclusion. I believe Stewert, Campbell, Gordon, Malcolm,McHone, are all possibilities as well, any others please correct me. We have small clues but no hard evidence. Any additional info on this perticular research please send my direction. ThankYou Jeff McComb-Southern California

    1. [EDB] Census indexes/Maps
    2. Chris Draisey
    3. Thank you, Val, for clarifying the status of local census indexes. It was mentioned that, for 1851 in Edinburgh, the parishes of Canongate, the Old Town, and New Town had been indexed. So, how many parishes were there then? Can anyone recommend a site that would show a simple map for that time period? Secondly, I'm looking for William NORRIE, age about 10 years - appreciate knowing if he appears in those 1851 indexes. Thanks. Christine
