I have two requests and hope there is someone out there that can help me. Some time ago on Scottish Origins I found what I believed to be my Great Grandmothers birth. I now know her mothers maiden name and would like to send for a birth certificate. Where would I obtain a certificate for a birth registered in "Springburn" which I think is in the Glasgow area and does it cost the same as here in England £6.50. I know this is not an "Edinburgh" question but this is the only Scottish list I am on and I am sure you must have at least one nice kind hearted list member in the Glasgow area. I have ordered the Duddingston Parish Registers from the FRC in Sunderland. I am hoping to find the birth of my Gr Gr Grandfather Robert FULLER born c 1806, I do not know how long it will take for them to arrive at the centre however if anyone is going onto the Scottish Origins site could they try this combination and let me know if there are any possible entries. I believe you can do this and as long as you do not print out the information you do not lose one of your 30 pages. Margaret Hall Wallsend.
I am a new member from Saskatchewan, Canada. I would like to hear from anyone with an interest in the following the family of David Hogarth or Hoggarth, born May 22, 1879 at Eckford, Roxburghshire. I am also searching for the Walter Tait family, born Mar 1,1848 at Manor, Peeble-shire. Thanks Winston Tait
Does anyone connect to this family: 1881 census shows James ANDERSON aged 30 born Pardovan (Linlithgow) a railway yardsman at George St North Leith, and his family: Annie (nee ORMISTON) bn Portobello 1850 Agness 8 Alexr 6 George 1 plus lodger James L BRASS James and Annie's son William was born 1882 Anne died 1890 and James married Elizabeth BRYCE in 1891. Their daughter Jemima Agnes was born 1893, two months after her father's death. I am not related to this family myself, but I have info on them. Hello: I am helping a friend research his family tree. His family, the Dobsons, were involved in the woollen industry in Innerleith. Using Scottish Origins, I made a number of preliminary searches and came to the conclusion that there was a very good chance that the Dobsons I was finding were all related to each other. I therefore started at 1800 and in ten year increments, searched back. To my surprise, I found several hundred Dobson entries, all in and around Edinburgh and the lowlands, going back to 1630. However, I have noticed that almost every couple has two marriage entries, not one. I have not ordered any certified copies yet because I want to be sure I am ordering the right ones. All of the double entries seem to be in two recording districts, some on the same day, some several months apart. Can someone explain this to me? There may be more than one explanation. My guesses are: (1) one marriage entry would be the banns, the other the marriage. (2) one marriage entry could be a civil ceremony, the other a church ceremony (Does this happen in Scotland?) (3) these entries are registrations, not dates of marriage, and one could be the registration in the groom's district, the other in the bride's. is this an Edinburgh or urban practice? Do a lot of people have two marriage entries? Thank you in advance to anyone who can explain this. Margaret in Toronto

St Andrews Sq was the terminus for the country buses not the city buses. So you would land there if you came in from eg Biggar orPeebles or even Glasgow. Although the drivers could set you off earlier if you knew where to ask for. This bus station has been undergoing a major restructuring and most of the stances seem to have been moved out into St Andrew Sq itself. A lot of Edinburgh local buses still follow old (often tram) routes and do go along Princes St. But by no means all. And the coverage is not as good as it used to be. In the mid 1980s the buses were 'privatised'. To cut a long story short this stopped "cross subsidy" and left us with a private company where we once had a public bus service. It was no longer possible for revenue generated by the popular routes to be used to support the less busy runs and many of these were cut back dramatically. So you do have to be careful where you stay and be aware that if you choose somewhere off a main route you will find buses are infrequent and may stop in the early evening. On the positive side there is a new day server ticket which gives you the run of the buses for 2 pounds, or one pound fifty if you buy your ticket after 9.30 am and at weekends. Choose your location by mobility. If you dont mind walking long distances your choice is wider, but if you want to enjoy the nightlife or are worried about hills, you need to pick more carefully. Hiring a car is not the best option for most folk since parking is difficult and distances are short. Save it for out of town trips. Best of all is somewhere which gives you both the Princes St buses (15,16, 11 etc) and the ones that go over the top of the volcanic spine of the Old Town and therefore past the National Library, the Central Library, the older bits of Edinburgh University, and the main National Museum (examples are 23, 27 and 45) Hope this helps Judy Copywriter@tesco.net searching BRIGHT, CRUMP, WHITEHEAD, WATKISS, SHORE, HOPE EDWARDS, WRIGHT (all Salop) INSKIP (Salop/Staffs), MARTIN (Staffs), MITCHELL (SCT and CHS/Lancs), SMITH, AITCHISON, THORBURN (all DFS), McRAE (Lewis/L'pool), HOWARTH (Lancs), OLSEN (N'way,L'pool), WESTON (Salop/L'pool), EDWARDS(Flint), and VIGGOR (CHS/L'pool/Salop) > >

Please e-mail me > privately. Christine, NRH is in central Edinburgh, just off the East end of Princes Street and close to St Andrew's Square, which is the main bus terminus. So wherever you choose to stay in the city, it will be easy to get there by bus. There is useful information available online: Bus routes: http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk/ B&Bs: http://www.edinburgh.org/ Hope this helps! Liz

Hello, Chris, re: B&B's in Edinburgh. About two years ago my husband and I stayed at Anyetree Guest House, 12 Duddingston Crescent, Edinburgh, EH15 3AS, 'phone 0131 620 0105. It was run by the very nice Lowing family. We had a large front room upstairs overlooking a park, and the charge was about GBP20 a night, but of course this could have changed by now. The big advantage was that the bus stop was right outside the front gate. We had travelled up from London through York (can't remember the motorway No.) and Duddingston Crescent was on the way into Edinburgh so it was easy to find. We had a very pleasant stay there and the Lowings were very helpful and friendly. Have a good trip (wish I was coming with you) and good luck with your research. Dornie in Melbourne, Australia.
