Hello Jay This is the same address given by my great great great grandfather when he married in 1828. They had left well before the 1841 census tho. I did check the film, but I dont think I wrote down the names since I was only looking for MITCHELL. I do remember thinking there was another family which could have been from his wifes home county of Dumfriesshire, maybe IRVINE???? What name are you looking for? Are you in the UK? I can tell you quite a lot about the area and what is there now. You wont find this Spences Place in the Edinburgh university street name site. Judy Copywriter@tesco.net

Hi Could someone with access to the 1841 census for Castlebarns Edinburgh, please please please do a lookup for me for the occupants at 7 Spence's Place,Castlebarns, Edinburgh I would be so very greatfull for the help. Thankyou jkay.
Hello Graham, I'm wondering about the William in your family. Do you know his middle name? Wondering about the possibility of a William Alexander Inglis. My ggrandfather named one of his daughters Janet, and a son George. I suppose the possibility of a George Alexander Inglis could be there as well. I'll keep your message handy and if I ever find anything more about his family, I'll contact you. Having just joined the list I thought I would mention my interest in Edinburgh. My GGgrandparents were born in Edinburgh probably around 1809. Their names were Robert COCHRAN(E) and Mary Ann McCULLOCH. I believe they were also married in Edinburgh before relocating to Ireland where their children were born. I have no idea how to proceed. If anyone can help at all I would really appreciate it. Beverly (Canada)

Hi, Can any one tell me if this church still exists and if it is still operating in Edinburgh? Perle
Hello to all on this List. I need to say oops! I should have said that I have thrashed as much as I can get out of the IGI, by way of search for individual/siblings, for parents, for spouse and by batch number for parish search. The result in many cases is the discovery that for many parishes there is no record of the Dissenter Churches. There is also a very scant record for the Catholic Church. In one parish on the Borders I found only 10/12 entries for the entire period between 1700 to 1856. Now all of the records could not have gone down the plug hole. At least some should have survived. I have been told that the place to search for the seemingly missing records is New Register House. My original question was intended to find out if any means existed for me to get access of any kind which would not cost me an arm and a leg. I estimate that I have currently some 30/40 specific persons or family groups who's record details are needed to continue research in the Lothians, the Borders, Galloway/Ayr, Inverness and the North East of Scotland. These are the ones I know about and as sure as there are little green apples on the tree, there will be more just as soon as I get the answers to the current research questions. During the 10 years of research so far put in I have been very fortunate in contacting many cousins and researchers of various family names who have been able to pass on data and clues which have helped to get the research to this point. Now that I am digging deeper and the going is getting harder. I now need to take on a new learning curve. The nearest LDS Family History Centre is over an hour and a half from my home by public transport and the centre is open on three days a week for four hours each of those days only. I have the partial use of a car which is not as convenient as I would like. The local LDS FHC does not have many Scots records and I am in the process of ordering films, fiche and CDs. Don't worry I'll crack this yet! Thanks to all for your supportive encouragement. That has certainly raised my good spirits. Remember if I can help in any way, my time is yours. Regards Greg in Raumati New Zealand
Greg Go to the nearest Mormon Church. You'll have to find out when the Family History room is open - look them up in the book under 'Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints'. They are nice people and eager to help you. Look through the Indices to the Old Parish Registers and IGI. They are available on both fiche and CD. You can copy out the information or download it to a floppy disk. Everything up to 1855 for Scotland is almost as good there as you'll get in Scotland. 1855-1900 - you may be lucky: it may be there. Next Order films of the original OPRs or Censuses. If there is a census index read it first: it can take hours and hours to read a whole census film. Try also the IGI on line and, for post 1855 up to 1900 Scots' Origins (It costs) Next. Start saving. For post 1900 it is really worthwhile to go to Edinburgh (New Register House). [Besides it still feels like home and I like the place] It costs £17 a day and you need to be there before 8.30 a.m. There's always a queue. Jim McArthur Invercargill NZ
Hello to all on the List. I have a general question regards access to the Genealogical material/data held at New Register House. Because I live in New Zealand, and like many others who do not live in Edinburgh, I do not have ready access to that place. As some may say "It's too far to walk". Is there any means which I could employ to access research data from my desk at home? Being a somewhat thrifty person by nature, and by upbringing, through my Scots ancestors, I am seeking the most cost effective means which could be available. My wife and I have many Scottish family connections in both the Highlands and the Lowlands, and we are aware that the full cost of researching our many ancestral lines in Scotland many be more than we are prepared to pay. The current state of international finances has the exchange rate for the Pound Stg = three and half $NZ and falling. This is a daunting state of affairs. If the kind souls on this list would pass to us any of their hard earned tips, hints, suggestions or insights we would always be in your debt. In return we many be able to make some repayment in kind through research in New Zealand on your behalf. Many records in this country are in the public domain and readily accessible at local libraries, including index to BDM, burial records, electoral rolls and business directories. I live near Wellington where I have access to the National Library and the National Archives. Regards to all, may the force be always with you, and thanks for any response you may care to make to my question. Greg in Raumati New Zealand
Has anyone come across the name McSALLY? In 1870 Edward McSALLY (a Staff Sergeant in the Highland Borderers) married Eliza McQUEEN in Stirling They continued to live in Stirling and had several daughters. Unfortunately in 1886 both Edward and Eliza died and the 4 oldest girls were placed in an orphanage in Edinburgh. The youngest was 'adopted' by Michael and Bridget KERR. Annie Patricia (b. 1880) married my grandfather Creighton McCLELLAN in Edinburgh but I would dearly like to find out what happened to the other sisters: Christina (b. 1878), Helen (b. 1882), Catherine (b. 1883) and Elizabeth (b. 1886, adopted). Apparently there were also several boys named Edward Duncan but they all died in infancy. Regards, Sally Wain
Hello All !! I ordered "The Macomb Family Record" by Henry Alexander Macomb."It connects with the phk almost perfectly, but on the Macomb side, (our cousins). They both have "McComb families" reported in the same county," Dunturkey, Ballynure Ireland prior to 1700. Then they are also found in the same cities in America, Cumberland Co. Penn., Westchester co New York, one address is a dead ringer, the old mansion whats now called "Bunkers Hotel" NewYork. John Gordon McComb b. 1717 is listed as number 4 on the Macomb descendency line, he would be generation 6 in the phk, the son of the ?? McComb who married Jane Gordon, page 21->phk. John G. McCombs' father is William McComb b. 1685 (<-same as Bl--K, ), same place too, Dunturkey Ballynure Ireland. Williams father is John McComb(bie) b. 1650 Scotland, Linen Draper, wife unknown, supposedly "died" in 1732<-(same year Bl--k emigrated from Ireland), Johns father is John McCooam (MacCombie) b. 1619 "Scotland. "(They are trying to say that this is Iain Mors son John. This does conflict with he Skirmish at Drumbgley story, or McCombies field, but who knows the real truth?) John MacCombies b.1619, his father would then be Iain Mor. "I think" its one of Iain Mors brothers, uncles, nephews or cousins, but not him. It is said that John survived the skirmish at McCombies field, and later died if his wounds. I believe that "sometimes," when it is said that someone had died, it could be actually a lie, to successfully emigrate, to cover any tracts left behind. "Escape and Live in Peace!!!" they all think Im dead!! The 2 books are off by 2 generations. The Macomb book shows 2 additional generations between John Gordon McCombs father William (Bl--ks brother) and Iain Mor. Since Jane Gordon is listed in both books, that only leads to one conclusion, please correct me if I wrong. The phk "is" only missing 2 generations. "Bl--k and William" would be the "great grandsons" of Iain Mor-according to the Macomb book, and the "children" of Iain Mor -according to the phk. In compling with the challenge dared by Peter on page 259 of the phk, "I believe I have come across the "75 year period" of missing info, that was determined by Peter and his associates." Both books mention keyplaces like Dunturkey, Ballynure, Ireland, Cumberland co. Pennsylvania, Westchester co.New York, even one address to be exact, BUNKERS HOTEL, with dates that are too-close for comfort. There is a 16 page addition to the Macomb book with some references to the phk, added afterwards. The phk was out before the Macomb book, about 5 years earlier, 1912. That means when they wrote the Macomb book, they have found more info later. The 2 "being so close" this could have some validity towards a "breakthrough" in the stuck point. "The connection between Ireland and Scotland. Does anyone know where I can find "whole" lists of the brothers, uncles, cousins of Iain Mor? There were three McCombs noted in the U.S. before us. John McComb w.Elizebeth Middleton(1668), his son John McColme(1723), and Dugall McComb 1718 - Scotch-Irish Pioneer. Regards, Jeff McComb
Hi Listers I've started adding selected entries for Edinburgh & Leith, from the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory (Professions & Trades) for 1842/1843 to my web page. 1st part covers agricultural implement makers to artificial flower makers. More will follow in the coming weeks. Please remember this is only a transcription therefore mistakes can be made. I've been using photocopies I made from the original directory so they can be hard to read sometimes. Good luck, Lynne Parish of Corstorphiine http://www.angelfire.com/ct2/corstorphine/

Richard, In the area between Nicolson Street and the Pleasance in Edinburgh (both of which you will find on a modern map), there were/are North, South, East and West Richmond Street as well as Richmond Court. I would guess it was in this area that your ancestor lived. Best regards, Val, Edinburgh -----Original Message----- From: Richard Robertson [mailto:richrob4@home.com] Sent: 13 March 2001 19:22 To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [EDB] Where is Richmond? In the St. Cuthbert's OPR for the baptism of my second great grandmother, Janet MONRO, her father Charles is listed as a "thread manufacturer in Richmond..." Charles was baptized in Edinburgh Parish, his wife, Janet HUNTER, was born in St. Cuthbert's Parish and Janet was baptized at St. Cuthbert's, so I assume Richmond is a Midlothian location. Perhaps a neighborhood in Edinburgh? Any help greatly appreciated. Richard Robertson richrob4@home.com http://members.home.net/richrob4/index.htm ______________________________
Dear Listers Is anyone able to point me in the right direction please with the following? My ancestor, William Murray BORTHWICK, is said to have worked on the Edinburgh Evening News / Edinburgh Post (or similar name) possibly with two of his cousins in the late 1820s and early 1830s. (He was certainly a printer and publisher of newspapers and journals, including the Clydesdale Examiner and Glasgow Chronicle. There is a lot of evidence of this for the years 1818-1822 but that is the only period I've been able to locate him.) I have been unable to discover exactly when William Murray Borthwick and his cousins worked on the newspaper in Edinburgh. It is also said that he worked on - or even that he was part-owner of - the Scotsman. This must have been either before 1818 or betweenApril 1822 and April 1833 (when he and his family set sail for Australia). Does anyone know who I might contact (the Scotsman has already told me that they don't have any information going back this far)? Would there be any libraries or archives of historical information or documents about the early days of Edinburgh newspapers and their owners/employees?
