    1. [EDB] Statistical Account of Scotland
    2. Jim Cairns
    3. Hi Listers Many of you will know of this site, but it's so useful and interesting, I thought that it would be worth sharing! It's the Statistical Account of Scotland site at Edina. Don't be put off by the 'Statistical' title. The Accounts (1791-99 and 1845) are descriptions of Parishes all over Scotland. Written usually by the Parish Minister, they give a sometimes vivid account of life at the time. Sorry if I'm teaching my Granny to suck eggs! Jim Cairns

    2. Linda Adam
    3. Hello, Although this is my first posting to this list, I am familiar with the Aberdeenshire List and have found it invaluable. I believe that I have located a possible new family link, as my Birnie family to this point has been located in Aberdeenshire. Hopefully there may be a list member who could offer some assistance. On the 1881 Edinburgh New North, census I have located David M. (Mitchell) Birnie, age 41, born in Glasgow abt. 1840. David Birnie was a Brass Founder Finisher. I have been unable to locate his parents and am hopeful that someone may be able to offer additional information. David Birnie married Helen (Ellen) Affleck McLaren, July 03, 1863, in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian. To my knowledge they had eight children. I am concentrating on one son, Edward Birnie b. 19.08.1867, who married Isabella Skilling, June 05.1891, in Glasgow. Any assistance would be most graciously received. Regards, Linda Adam Ontario, Canada

Hi Colin, Don't know if this is of any interest to you, I was looking in the St Cuthberts 1851 Census and came across a William Ogilvie (different spelling) he was a visitor aged 22 and occupation as writer to signets general. Born Ans/Dundee. I remembered your posting. Robina, Bris. We have a David OGILVY (painter of Edinburgh) who was married in 2/7/1801 in Edinburgh to Catharina SPENCE (Catharina's father John SPENCE painter of Edinburgh). From this marriage we have their son David OGILVY (my Great Great Grandfather) born 16/6/1804 (who did law at the Signet Edinburgh) It is logical that the other four found are ours! > Does Some Kind Soul have an Edinburgh Census to check for this period to see if the above and advise us of the listing? > > We seem to be at a stand still and any help would be appreciated > Regards, > > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). > Version: 6.0.237 / Virus Database: 115 - Release Date: 7/03/2001 > > > ==== SCT-EDINBURGH Mailing List ==== > Need mail list help? 3. Hi Margaret, Catherine Hunter m.s. Murray died in 1888 age 70 years - her parents names are Robert Murray and Catherine KERR. According to the 1861 Catherine Murray was 45 and the 1871 census she was 53 - both say she was born in Edinburgh and I think she had a sister called Isabella. There is a marriage for Catherine KERR and Robert Hunter dated 29 Dec 1807 at Dalmeny West Lothian in the Scottish Church Records and I've ordered the film. Any connection? Cheers Agnes

    3. I have the following marriage entry for my gggrandparents OPR Marriage Campbell/Carmichael Liberton 3rd Oct. 1851. James Campbell mason, and Jane Carmichael both residing in Burdiehouse in this parish have entered their names for proclamation in order to marriage. These parties being proclaimed accordingly, and no objections offered, were regularly married before witnesses. I am having trouble finding anything more out about James Campbell's birth, death, or parentage. James and Jeannie (Jane) had a daughter (Isabella Suttie MacGregor Campbell) born in Newburgh, Fife ca 1853. Jeannie remarried in 1857 to Thomas Braid in Newburgh. So I assume that James had to have died between 1852 and 1857. I am suspicious that Alexander Campbell and Joanna Richmond may be his parents, since they had a son James born 5 Dec 1826, Liberton Ferryside, Midlothian and he was Chr. 7 Jan 1827 Liberton, Midlothian -- but I have no proof. Could someone who has access to the MI's for the Liberton/Edinburgh area check to see if they have any info on my James Campbell, please? Any and all help greatly appreciated Respectfully Marsha Walker Stoney Creek, Ontario

    3. Hi again jkay reread your message and think I should clarify that this address was not a single house but some kind of apartment block - in fact I think a kind of courtyard. Fact is, if someone did the lookup they would have to note down a long list of names, ages and occupations, most of which would have nothing to do with you! So you would not get many people willing to do that, its quite a lot of work. So you need to ask for a specific name unless there is a particularly reason for asking about the house or apartment. (By the way When posting messages it is a good idea to put the NAME in caps in the subject line - I nearly overlooked this one) Judy Copywriter@tesco.net searching BRIGHT, CRUMP, WHITEHEAD, WATKISS, SHORE, HOPE EDWARDS, WRIGHT (all Salop) INSKIP (Salop/Staffs), MARTIN (Staffs), MITCHELL (SCT and CHS/Lancs), SMITH, AITCHISON, THORBURN (all DFS), McRAE (Lewis/L'pool), HOWARTH (Lancs), OLSEN (N'way,L'pool), WESTON (Salop/L'pool), EDWARDS(Flint), and VIGGOR (CHS/L'pool/Salop) ---------- >From: jkay60@home.com >To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [EDB] Please help >Date: Tue, Mar 20, 2001, 8:53 am > > Hi > Could someone with access to the 1841 census for Castlebarns Edinburgh, > please please please do a lookup for me for the occupants at > 7 Spence's Place,Castlebarns, Edinburgh I would be so very greatfull for > the help. > Thankyou jkay.
