    1. [EDB] Death Registry - Edinburgh or Leith
    2. I have found the IGI a very useful tool when locating births, marriages of relatives, but I have found it less than successful locating deaths. Can anyone recommend a site that may assist me with deaths in 1910 and later? The area in question would more than likely be Edinburgh or Leith. Thanks, Brett Prentice Brisbane Australia

    3. Hello List Having photocopied a page of the Edinburgh 1851 census index for Canongate I have these families: TEARNEY TEMPELTON TEMPLE 3 households TEMPLETON 4 households Also the family of William TENNANT letter carrier, but they may go over the page. By cross referencing with the street codes I can tell you where they lived. This does not include any individuals of different names in the households because they would be indexed elsewhere. Nor does it include the institutions, this is just the main index. And it is ONLY the Canongate district. Please do get in touch if you have these names in your family. I'm afraid I have no plans to return to the library in the near future owing to pressure of work so please don't deluge me with unrelated lookups, this is all I have available. 3. Brett: I don't know of a consolidated death registry for Edinburgh, but I have found the following films from the LDS Family History Center useful. The list is not all inclusive, there are probably more. 1. Film No. 304664 - Canongate Burials, 1789 - 93 2. Film No. 1040213 - St. Cuthbert Burials 1844 - 45 and index; also St. Buccleuch and Dalsy Cemetery 3. Film No. 1066748 - Edinburgh Parish Burials 1785 -1839 4. The street address was number 44 which is the code for Campbell's Close, Big Jack's Close being Code 31. But it would seem pretty certain this is them. Campbell's Close was heavily populated and had no house numbers altho you can tell separate households from the schedule numbers. Altho I didnt notice him when I was looking at the film the index shows a Robert TAYLOR on the same page - unmarried 29 yr old shoemaker born Edinburgh. He was a lodger, dont know who with. As you can see Helen was born in NBL which I think is Northumberland. Which is rather handy since this would of course put her into the Civil Reg timeframe. from the brief look I had at the film I dont think there was any more info to be gleaned. 1. [EDB] HIDDEN FAMILIES - *~#~~ ALIASES ~**^#^
    2. Hello All I have had several people tell me that the Hidden Families article by, Stuart Mitchell came out all funny with "wierd objects". I dont know why it did that, only a few came out that way. It came originaly as a Word 6 doc. and I converted it to a txt. doc, to insert it into the email. This might have something to do with it, it did lose alot of great farmatting in the conversion. Anyone who would like the original Word 6.doc, I will be happy to send it off. It's "one" of the most intersting articles in my whole genealogical adventure so far. Im sure Stuart would want you all to have it the way it was originaly intended. By the way, he had this article published a few years back in the Journal of Abeerdeen & N.E.Scotland Family History Library Society. (in fact an interim research report on the OPR (Invera'an) and RC registers of Glenlivet by him is there as well. If anyone can get this on disc, please send it my way. I was in contact with Stuart about a month ago when I was given permission to post this article, I was shocked to hear he had passed 1 day before I ended up sending. Something said to post that article, and thats what I did. Anyone who would like the original please let me know, just give me about a week to do it all once. I have never been to Scotland but I hope this helps. Hopefully I'll make it out some day, Im ony 28 Ive got some time left. -J.McComb-S.California-Researching Clan MacKintosh and Clan Chattan-

Hello Ann, Brown Street is just off the Pleasance, in south-central Edinburgh. Let me know if you want me to go have a look at number 6, the next time I'm in that part of town. I'm intrigued by your post, since I have a mysterious BORTHWICK connection to my SANDERSON line: a Helen BORTHWICK turns up from time to time - she was witness at a SANDERSON wedding in 1871, and a child of a different marriage was named Helen Borthwick SANDERSON. Would it be a coincidence that the head of the family, Peter SANDERSON, also at one time lived near the Pleasance, and was also associated with the whisky trade? Liz

    2. Ruth
    3. Having recently been 'perusing' an LDS film of original parish records (Abbotshall, Fife) which began in 1650, I agree with the previous comments regarding odd, or unexpected spelling. However, think about writing these days - if I'm in a hurry, my normally 'fair hand' soon becomes a scrawl, and at times, I am hard pressed to read what I have written! Also, spelling had not become 'standardised to the extent we accept these days (American versions of English notwithstanding:-)!!) How many people were literate then? I suspect we'd all get on easier if we could read with an accent. Good hunting, Ruth in Brum (Birmingham, England....you have to know that the locals pronounced it 'Brummagem!) Searching in Fife: LESSELS, all variations, 1650 - present, plus MOORHEAD, GRAY & lots more. In Edinburgh: LESSELS, DUNCAN, BRYDEN 1850 - present.

    2. Ann Carson
    3. Dear Edinburgh and Midlothian Listers With the greatly appreciated help of Judy I now know that my ancestor, William Murray BORTHWICK was a Printer and then a Spirit Dealer living at 6 Brown St, Edinburgh from 1823-1826. Could anyone on the list tell me please whether this address still exists, and if so what is there now? Would it be the building the Borthwick family lived in? And my second question - is anyone able to tell me a little more about spirit dealers in Edinburgh in the 1820s? Would WM Borthwick have had a shop, or a hotel? Would he have needed a licence to sell spirits? (In Australia these were needed in the first half of the 19th century & the records are very helpful) I searched for Brown St on the internet tonight and found a sign that I must travel to Scotland! (Well, this is my story and I'm sticking to it.) I found "Edinburgh Flats" in Brown St, right near the Royal Mile and Old town and all the places I must visit in the interests of my family research! I think Edinburgh Flats must be at the other end of Brown St but I'm sure I'm meant to go to Scotland and stay there for a week or two (wistful sighs). 3. What Bill says is very important to anyone used to searching on the more 'forgiving' LDS site or even the 1881 discs. Scots Origins is very precise. After several visits I found the key to successful searching was the judicious use of the wildcard. eg Ann will not give you Anne, but Ann* will. Basically, the site only chucks out what you ask for. Since this is pay per download, I think it's a plus. But it does take a bit of getting used to. Judy Copywriter@tesco.net

    3. I have also found it useful to write down a name in as many ways as possible ahead of time, one over the other in a columnar fashion. Align all the same letters and then just fill in the odd-ball with the * as Judy said. Example: Mary Ann McLeod Mary Anne MacLeod Mariann M'Cleod Marianne McLoed etc. changes to Mar* M*Leod Mariann* McL**d Mar* Ann* M*C*eod MacL**d etc. Then pick the one that will give you the most bang for your lollie!
