Listers; By back-tracking you can nab the source of this great site. Finding the portal to the referenced URL previously noted was a little confusing. I did find it interesting that not "all" Edinburgh streets were so blessed. "Society" for example, an enclave of row houses east of Grey Friars Church was not noted. Maybe someone can fill that wee detail in for me. Apparently, it was levelled for a parking lot for the above noted famous church! This URL will take you to the main address for more extensive study of Edinburgh and its history. http://www2.ebs.hw.ac.uk/edweb/edc/welcome.html I am also interested in anyone who is doing research in the (Tradeston, Anderston, Hutchesontown) area of Lanark. If you have access to any census data from there I would like to contact you off-list. I just got new info on my husband's grandmother Helen Nelson Robertson. We just received her original application for Social Security in USA. In it she states she was born in Scotland. Her father was Donald Robertson and her mother's maiden name was Helen Nelson Gibson. Her birth date is May 19, 1903. Does anyone have them in their family tree? Good Morning from Washington DC! I've been receiving the Edinburgh notices for the past several weeks and have enjoyed them immensely. Today I'm going to give it a try. I'm looking for ROBERT JAMES GILLESPIE (or GLASPRY?) who was a student and later a professor at Edinburgh University before he emigrated to Basking Ridge/Morristown, New Jersey, USA 1760-1770 (our guess). He married after he arrived in New Jersey and fought in our Revolutionary War. Before I ask Edinburgh University to do a search with unspecified dates (they said they are backlogged for months) I thought I would try here. Any ideas? Thanks for your help. Melissa Johnson

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to see if they can find my Great Grandmother's family who may have originally been Irish, but lived in Edinburgh. My Great Grandmother was JANE TRACEY & her parents were JOHN & ELLEN TRACEY. According to Jane's marriage cert she was 19yrs old in 1898, so she'd have been born about 1879 . I don't know how common the surname TRACEY is in Edinburgh, but would be most grateful if someone could have a look for me. Many thanks. -- Best Wishes Angela<boon.bluecats@ntlworld.com> Pettistree Homepage http://www.pettistree.suffolk.gov.uk/
Hello all, I have a book published in 1987 entitled "Count All Men Mortal - a History of Scottish Provident 1837-1987" by Maurice Lindsay. If anyone has an ancestor who had connections with Scottish Provident or has any other interest in the company, then I'd be happy to do a lookup. The book is indexed and contains details and pictures of senior members of staff from 1837 onwards. Regards Mags

Hi Colin and All What about the good old fashioned Post Office Money Order? I use that in preference, or get the Genealogical Society of Victoria to organise the cheque for me. Recently had to pay $100 Australian to America ($191 American at the time) Cost me an extra $8.00 for the service. Cheers Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Victoria Australia What's your story? COSTLY PROBLEM The below may be of interest to the Listers; Payment to UK is expensive from AUSTRALIA and will give the viewers details showing the expense incurred recently when I went the CBA bank for a cheque for a 4 (four) UK pound cheque to cover the payment for a parish register, the bank charges were "Transaction Fee" $4.00 Aust. plus "Conversion" amount of $11.67 Aust. plus a "Fee and Stamp Duty" of$15.00 Aust.totalling $26.67. So in Australia we do have an expensive problem to purchase items this way. I noticed on some BMD sites they do not have all the popular "Credit Cards" listed especially Southwark BMD who seem to list "Visa" and no mention of "Master Card" One other site mentioned they have facility in Australia where you can place your payment in Australia!!!, possibly this may be something jointly that Parish Family History Societies could look at? I found out another problem when you send a Australian Cheque to UK the banks in UK want to charge an exorbitant amount to process a Australian cheque. I sent a cheque! from $25.00 Aust. to a charity organization and the UK bank wanted more to cash the cheque than what is was worth!! Possibly the only other way would be to use a "Professional Australian Family Transcription Service", pay them in Australia Dollars and let them do the procurement???? I think this maybe worth while to keep in mind! Regards,Colin Darby, Armidale NSW Australia. colnet@optusnet.com.au --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
