Someone told me (a Galbraith from Texas) that there is a Galbraith borough in Edinburgh. Can anyone confirm this? My family legend is that an ancestor was a lawyer in Edinburgh and that his portrait was hung in some sort of hall there. Does anyone have any knowledge of the Galbraiths of Edinburgh? Ruby

Hi Stuart, Does either the 1858/9 or the 1875/6 Directory list any George BROWN's? You found one for me at 10 Bernard Street, Leith (a Baker) last year. I'm still on his trail, but not having much luck. David Brown Lancashire claretnut@aol.com
With some wonderful help from these lists I now know that in the 1928/9 Post Office Directory for Edinburgh there is a W M Borthwick, Coach Proprietor, 25 Princes St. Could listers advise please ....would there be any other source of information about this person and/or the coach business? Were there records of coaches and their "runs" ? Did people require licenses to run a coach business? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you all for taking the trouble to answer my probably silly question, though I wouldn't have thought of that explanation. Thanks again. Eleanor
Hi! All, Could someone please tell me what the letters SKS stand for,I keep seeing questions sent to them and dont know what it is. Eleanor
Jan, I have directories for Edinburgh and Leith (they are combined) for 1858-9 and 1875-6. 1858-9 shows John Hill, Boot and Shoe warehouse, 43 Nicholson Street, Edinburgh. John Hill, spirit dealer, 7 Northumberland Place Edinburgh, but near the top of Leith Walk. John M'Kay, spirit dealer, Newhaven 1875-6 shows: John Hill, spirit dealer, 33 Bath Street Leith. There is no John M'Kay listed as a spirit dealer in Leith, but Mrs M'Kay, spirit dealer, 28 Portland Place, Leith Hope this is helpful. Stuart. What a difference a good night sleep makes, last night I put in a request for a look up for Bethune 1871. Then this morning I realized that they were not even in Edinburgh at that time, one of there daughters born 1872 was born in Elgin, Moray. So my apologies for wasting your time. I have information on the 1881 census that gives Alexander Bethune's age as 67 yrs but his death certificate says 53 yrs, that is why I was looking for an earlier census to see what age he was then. I do have another inquiry that I am having I problem with, that maybe someone on the list could help in some way. Alexander Bethune shot himself at 9 Leslie Place, 30th November 1889. I was trying to see if there was any mention of this in any of the newspapers at the time. I have been in contact with the Scotsman on line, but so far they have not replied, this was Jan of this year. I am in California so checking the National Achieves myself is out of the question. But if anyone has ideas how I could go about checking on this event please let me know. I have an aunt in Edinburgh but I am not sure she would know were to look. I guess what I am really asking is, if some one is in the library of the National Archives could they check for me. All the best. Sandra p.s. Thanks Judy.
Hello, Is there anyone on the list who has access to trade directories for Edinburgh and Leith? Would both places be in one directory? I'm interested in John McKAY (sometimes MACKAY) who was a Spirit Merchant in Leith in 1868. In that year his daughter, Louisa, married John HILL also a Spirit Merchant. John was the son of John HILL, a shoemaker (presumably in Leith). Any information about any of these people would be gratefully received! This is a small clip from the ~"MacKintosh Families of GlenShee and GlenIsla"by Alexander MacKintosh MacKintosh,The Heritage Nairn, Sept. 1916. p.1. The name Mackintosh is usually associated with the leading tribe of the Clan Chattan, which in the main is an Inverness-shire clan; but no doubt there have been and are many bearing the name without any connection either with Inverness-shire or with Clan Chattan. The word "toiseach" equivalent to the charter words " thane," "chamberlain," "seneschal," though primarily meaning a chief or leader, at an early period became attached to the person holding the position of steward or representative of the king or other high authority in a Gaelic-speaking district, probably because such person, in addition to being the collector of rents and the general administrator of the lands under his charge, would be responsible for mobilising and leading the men living on the lands in the event of their being called upon to fight. Thus wherever a toiseach or thane ruled there was always the possibility of his founding a family with the designation of Mac-an-toisich or Mackintosh, and having regard to the number of thanages known to have existed in early times it is somewhat surprising that such families are not more numerous than they are. Cosmo Innes, in his Scotch Legal Antiquities (pp. 80-3), gives two instances of families, in Glentilt and Lochaber respectively, who took their surnames from the office, but neither of whom, as he correctly says, had any connection with the Mackintoshes of Clan Chattan. Skene, in Celtic Scotland (iii. 358), mentions. -J.McComb-S.California-Researching Clan MacKintosh and Clan Chattan-
If anyone has access to the 1871 census or earlier could you do a look up for me. Searching for Alexander Bethune wife Margaret, Alexander was a gardener. Thanks Sandra.
Hello Listers Just came across a wonderful site - The Derivation of Edinburgh's Street Names In Two Parts - http://www.ebs.hw.ac.uk/STREETS/ The stories for the various streets include lots of the history of Edinburgh. I have an extract of one page of the 1891 Census for Newington, Edinburgh. It is for 23 Salisbury Road, which was apparently a girls' orphanage [not named]. It was founded (1887) and run by a Mary F. H. BELL who was a member of the Order of Poor Clares. Well, she was a rogue member - perhaps an extern sister. The Scottish Catholic Archives, Columba House, 16 Drummond Place, Edinburgh EH3 6PL have been very helpful in supplying background information. For other orphanages - the St Andrews Children's Society, Gillis Centre, 113 Whitehouse Lane, Edinburgh EH9 1BB might have information.
