Can anyone tell me whether 64 Canongate was the address of Queensberry House? And whether the poorhouse at 144 Comiston Road in the 1920s was the same one as the poorhouse in Craiglockhart in the 1870s? Many thanks Alan Baillie
Hello everyone, Further to Alan's listing regarding the above - I have a relative who died at 144 Coniston Road in 1924 but was unaware it was a poorhouse - until today (grin). Can Alan or anyone tell me anything about it and whether any records have been kept from it? I am guessing maybe at the Edinburgh City Chambers archives? Best wishes, Eileen in Hampshire
Are there any Edinburgh Hendersons out there that descend from these places? Edinburgh, Dunbar, Gladsmuir, Penston, or Alford Aberdeen? My ancestors seemed to have moved around a bit. I am trying to trace John Henderson who married Isabella Thomson. They had a son Robert ca 1828 Penston (Gladsmuir area) who married Christian/Christina Sandilandsin Edinburgh in 1850 and a daughter Elizabeth ca 1836 who married William Graham in Edinburgh in 1857 I am having trouble tracing other siblings or finding any info on these parents. Some of Robert and Christina's children were born in Dunbar, East Lothian and in Alford, Aberdeen Hope there is someone listening out there who can help. Best Wishes Marsha Walker Stoney Creek, Ontario
Unfortunately, anyone using any Outlook service or Micro Soft product to access the net is going to be targeted. In spite of my many warnings and bannings from lists for these warning. And in spite of the many aware persons telling others not to open attachments of any ilk, from any person, known or unknown, ROOTSWEB will not protect you! Your list administrator cannot protect you. Apparently, I am an "abuser" for telling listers how to protect themselves. You will get what you deserve if you persist in not following the very simple instructions of those of us who have some technical skills, have tried our best to help, but are being prevented by rootsweb and list administrators from spreading the gospel. If you are going to open attachments, do it off list and one on one, privately. Then you know for sure from whence it came and can deal with that one person instead of bogging down the list with all these virus memos. And even they may not know they sent it to you. But that is another issue for them to deal with. Filter them out until they get their act together. DO WHAT OTHERS ARE TELLING YOU TO DO! YOU ARE NOT ALWAYS DEALING WITH A VIRUS! YOU ARE DEALING WITH IMBEDDED PROGRAMS WHICH CAN COME TO YOU IN ANY FORMAT...EVEN AN INNOCENT E-MAIL WITH NO ATTACHMENT! ACCEPT NOTHING THAT IS NOT FAMILIAR TO YOU, TRIED AND TRUE. BE RUTHLESS...JUST LIKE YOU WOULD WITH CANCER! I am trying to find out if there are Kirk Session records for the parishes of Girthon, Kirkcudbright and Tongland in Kirkcudbrightshire and, if so, where they might be kept. They are not among those listed on the GROS website, but I read that most Kirk session records are at the National Archives of Scotland? Also, would someone please clarify if New Register House and General Register Office are one and the same. I will be coming to Edinburgh soon, and want to look at BMD. What other research facilities should I visit? Open to your recommendations. Thanks. Chris

Has any Genealogical society by chance done any transcribing of tombstones in and about Edinburgh - if so are they located in a libray or some other public accessable location ? Our society has done so here - quite easy to do research at the library in the societies transcription books Joanne Bechard St. Thomas Ontario Canada

I have been researching the CLARKs from the CANONGATE. 1790's is the furthest back, I would now like to 'branch out'. The surnames connected to the CLARKs are FERNIE, McCULLOCH, CATHIE, SOUTER, KEITH. Anyone recognise these names? REGARDS
My ancestors moved from Fife, Scotland to County Down, Ireland in 1740. Why would they leave Scotland to go to Ireland? Were there major political or economic troubles in Scotland around this time. What would be the most likely port that they sailed from being that they were from Fife? Were there ship passenger list preserved from that time period for such a short journey? Thanks, Robert

Does anyone have access to the 1891 census for Canongate, Edinburgh please? I'm interested in the name CATHCART BROWN who I know was in this parish at that time. Many thanks. -- Best Wishes Angela<boon.bluecats@ntlworld.com> Pettistree Homepage http://www.pettistree.suffolk.gov.uk/
Is there anyone on the list who is researching the McLAUGHLIN surname? My gggrandfather was born in Edinburgh about 1800, became a sailor and eventually moved to Canada and married there. Thanks for any help. Mildred in Lake Geneva, WI
Is anyone working on the KINLOCHs? I'm trying to find the parents of Barbara KINLOCH, spouse of Charles OLIPHANT, writer. Barbara was born about 1640. Charles was "of Langtoun," and all 14 of their children were born in Edinburgh Parish. Sir Francis KINLOCH, Lord Provost, Dean of Gild, etc. was a witness at the baptism of many of their children so I assume he is father, brother or uncle to Barbara, but I can't connect them. Any help greatly appreciated. Richard Robertson richrob4@home.com http://members.home.net/richrob4/index.htm
Let us not turn this into Anti-Virus-L@rootsweb.com BUT...once in a while some of us need the help of the techie types to stay alive and active on the lists, because that is where the matter is floating to the surface, like swamp gas! On the heels of Roy's excellent article re: BadTrans meanies. If you know the affixes ___ . ___ .___ and set your mail filter to intercept them this is an extra assurity of protection. The SARC, Symantec Anti-Virus Research Centre, will make these available to you as will any anti-virus program that auto-loads updates, especially those who send you e-mail notices of update availability. Remember, a-v programs only stop viruses they do not protect you from prankster or jokester programs, and what I call nuisance programs or spam mail. That must be done by you and manually. Roy game an excellent plan for Office and MS, the below is a repeat of the message for Netscape I sent out yesterday, but which has appeared to not have reached you. The following just came down my drain pipe from one of the above addressed site sources. Be aware. There is no attachment, just an address to be lured to. This is unsolicited nuisance spam and will be dealt with as such. The only way this occurs, is if the listers' names are somehow picked up by the sender and thus the "spamming" begins. Another prankster spam-us! NOT A VIRUS. ----------------------------- Subject: (None) Date: 29 Apr 02 5:02:18 AM From: gh55hghg@winning.com ----------------------------- In Netscape stop it by going to Edit, Message Filters, and then filling in the appropriate fields as you see fit. Or, fill in the fields as follows: Filter Name...your choice From...the "sender" of the message "contains" [fill in the above address next]... [gh55hghg@winning.com] Then "move to folder" "Trash" It now will never see the light of day on your computer! Empty trash as usual at the end of every session. Find it? If so the filter is working. If not then it has not reached you. When you have a moment visit your Filter Log file to see just what your filters are doing and if they are working for you. You can stop a lot of nuisance mail in this very simple fashion. Now, as to how to do this in MS IExplorer...I shall leave that to the experts in use of that medium. Happy hunting...Al Dempster Sheila wrote: > > In a tech newsletter, I got the following info on that virus: > > Ed Bott > The Wizard of IZ >
