    3. Hi Beryl In my tree FARQUHAR has been spelled many different ways other than FARQUAR, FERCHER, FORKER. FORGUHAR, FORQUHAR, and probably many others. Many times names were spelled phonetically on birth and death certificates as well as census. 3. G'day Edinburgh, This is my first e-mail to this list, so hello from sunny Australia! My husband's gr-grandfather, George Mathieson, was born at 40 Jamaica Street on 24/9/1864. His father was also George Mathieson, a joiner and journeyman. Can anyone familiar with Edinburgh tell me what is built on 40 Jamaica Street now, please? Also, if anyone has access to the 1871 census, I would be grateful to know whether the family was there at the time. The family seems to have migrated - gr-grandfather turning up in South Africa in 1895 when he was married there. However, I am trying to trace the rest of the family, so any help would be much appreciated. The family, as I know it, is as follows: George Mathieson Head born 29/12/1837 Leslie, Fife Catherine Bottomley Wife born 3/1/1837 Dunfermline, Fife George Mathieson Son born 9/8/1860 Glasgow John M Son born 6/10/1861 Glasgow Janet M Dau born 24/5/1863 Edinburgh George David M Son born 24/9/1864 Edinburgh Margaret Deas M Dau born 1866 Edinburgh William M Son born 1868 Edinburgh James M Son born 1870 Edinburgh Robertson Balfour M Son born 1872 Edinburgh Many thanks, Dale Mathieson geodale@bigpond.com

    3. Hi listers, I have in my possesion a picture taken in 1906 of a family named McArthur. The picture shows the husband, wife, and three children. Since the picture was taken about 1906, 1 little boy is about 5 or 6, the next little boy looks about 3, and the baby on the mothers lap about 8 - 9 months is wearing a dress., so you can figure their birth years from the date of the picture. That's all it says about the name. But somewhere in my memory I remember my grandmother telling a story of her and her girlfriend (Name ?) looking in the jewelry store window and picking out rings for their beaus to buy. My grandfather bought the wrong ring - but her girlfriends beau, Alec bought the right ring. I guess that stuck with me because I became confused by the boyfriends names both being Alec. But both girls married their Alec's, I do know that. Possibly the man in the picture is Alexander McArthur - if this rings a bell with anyone - I would gladly send the picture on to you. Cathy

Truly a wonderful find these letters - as I learned of one family member who went to McKeesport, Pa., USA to find his fortune = it didn't happen, but not for lack of trying - and he finally went home to Scotland and served 4 years in the armed forces during WWl. 3. Hello Allan and Listers, Thanks for posting this site > http://www.axissolutions.co.uk/steilshistory.htm It was very interesting to read about Craiglockhart Poorhouse. I had no idea there had been a 'poorhoose' there! As a child, Glenlockhart Road was one of our 'haunts', we'd spend hours climbing Craiglockhart Hill on the right (walking from Colinton Road), the golfcourse was on the hill on the left. My grandfather spent the last year of his life at the 'Glenlockhart Old People's Home' ( as we called it) in 1960, he died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in July 1961 ( well I remember that ghastly old place!) At the corner of Colinton Road and Glenlockhart Road the big old building shrouded by huge trees and a winding driveway was, what we knew as, 'The Convent' ( now Napier University, I believe). Nuns would walk sedately all the way down Craglockhart Avenue in their heavy black habits ( scaring the life out of me sometimes) their faces barely visible behind the vales and hoods! Thanks for jogging my memory! Cheers from NZ, Maureen ANDERSON LAWSON POOL in Liberton Gladsmuir Leith & Edinburgh > Many thanks to all who have replied to my queries about 144 Comiston Road and 64 Canongate. > > It's now confirmed that 64 Canongate was (and perhaps still is?) 3. Hello Everyone, I have a Robertson in my family and I was wondering if anyone would have soem information. My grandmother is Pearl Robertson born March 3 1897 in 29 West Port Edinburgh, District of St. George. I'm not sure if the 29 West port is a street address. Anyway, she had a brother Peter who I'm told was younger but I don't know when he was born. Her parents where Peter Robertson and Ellen Clarkston. Do any of these names ring a bell? As far as the address goes.. I assume the ditrict of St. George is in the city of Edinburgh and the 29 West Port (as I have already said) is a street address? Thanks. Kent Stienburg Ontario Canada

    2. Ronnie Strachan
    3. Hi all Edinburgh Listers, I am looking for any advice, pointers or help on how I should go about tracking down any living relations of an ancestor.I am a descendant of an Alexander Strachan(my Grandfather)Born 4/3/1879 at 12 Forbes street Edinburgh son of John Strachan and Catherine Longmuir. Alexander was one of nine children however he died young of TB in 1913 and his wife Christina Forbes(my Grandmother)somehow managed to lose contact with all of the Strachan side.I would be ecstatic if you could put me in contact with,or even point me in the right direction on how to make contact with any descendants of Alexanders eight known siblings. The following is the most relevant information I have, and as I say any advice on how to proceed would be most welcomed. I should say I'm living in Ireland so quick visits to Edinburgh are out! John Strachan(Great Grandfather) b 29/1/1836 Dunnichen Forfar, d 12/05/1913 at 13 Jeffrey St Edinburgh. He was a tailor and at 162 Pleasance St Cuthberts Edinburgh when he married Catherine Longmuir 5/6/1860.(She died 5/8/1912 at 13 Jeffrey Street) On the 1881 Census they at 8 St Leonards lane Edinburgh occupation given as Tailor and Cloth shrinker. I have sent for the 1891 census via Origins where they are still in the Canongate Edinburgh and probably at the same address. I remember visiting the area some 20 odd years ago before they pulled the tenemants down and seeing a Tailors shop front with the Strachan name on it but no proof it was my relation. Anyone out there with an Edinburgh Directory see Stachan the Tailors around the Canongate or indeed anything relevant on these other addresses? They had nine children. Elizabeth b 15/05/1859,Kirkden Forfar.on 81 Census at 2 St Margarets Rd St Cuthberts, unmarried, occ Domestic servant. She was the informant on her fathers death cert in 1913,her married name the given as Elizabeth Pettigrew.I have sent for(via Origins)for the most likely marriage to a James Pettigrew in 1888 Canongate Edinburgh.I can also most likely see them on the 1891 Census(Origins outline info)in Leith North with a son Gavin b Abt 1890. James b 18/02/1862,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 8 St Leonards Edinburgh, unmarried, occ Jeweller (Salesman) George b 23/02/1864,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 8 St Leonards Edinburgh, unmarried occ Blacksmith (App) I found via Origins his marriage on 22/8/1890 to Minnie Williamson, occ still Blacksmith and he was at 120 Plesance, Edinburgh. She was Domestic at 34 Georges sq. HelenAgnes b 25/05/1866,Edinburgh most likely on 81 Census at 22 West Mayfield St Cuthberts as domestic servant. Catherine b 26/10/1868,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 8 St Leonards Edinburgh, William b 12/08/1871,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 15 St Leonards Edinburgh(with my GG Grandfather George) David c 1876,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 15 St Leonards lane Edinburgh(with my GG Grandfather George) Joan c 1878,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 8 St Leonards lane, Edinburgh. Alexander(my Grandfather)b 04/03/1879,Edinburgh on 81 Census at 8 St Leonards, d 10/12/1914. Apart from the likely marriage of Elizabeth to James Pettigrew and George to Minnie Williamson I am unaware of any other marriages, children, addresses or death dates of the others. Only Alexander,Joan,David and William still seem to be living with the parents (John and Catherine)on the 1891 Census. How to proceed???? Ronnie Strachan Waterford,Ireland(Ex Kilmarnock)

    3. Many thanks to all who have replied to my queries about 144 Comiston Road and 64 Canongate. It's now confirmed that 64 Canongate was (and perhaps still is?) Queensberry House. My information on the Comiston Road address being a poorhouse was got by entering the address in Google. If you enter "poorhouse comiston" you get a few more hits. More than that I don't yet know. The Craiglockhart poorhouse, though, was a different place - originally in Poorhouse Road, later changed to Glenlockhart Road; see http://www.axissolutions.co.uk/steilshistory.htm and http://www.ebs.hw.ac.uk/STREETS/part2/g.htm I too would like to know if they kept any records that are still available. 3. Queensberry House was (is?) at 64 Canongate. The whole area around has been demolished to make way for the new Scottish Parliament building. Hopefully Queensberry House still stands and perhaps has been incorporated into the building? At present, I cannot find any information on 144 Comiston Road. There are no entries for that number inthe directories I have looked at. Stuart.
