Can anyone help? My great grandfather Robert Peattie born c.1838 married my gt.grandmother Elizabeth Johns(t)on(e), born c. 1843 on 22/9/1864 in London. They were both born in Scotland and from small items I have inherited I would think it was Edinburgh, although I met my third cousin Nellie Johnson when I visited Glasgow in the late 1950s. Both are common surnames, but someone out there may already have come across my gt. grandparents. Robert Peatties father was also a Robert Peattie. My grandmother was Elizabeth Peattie, with siblings Jessie N., Robert C., and Mary I.
Hi Listers: Have a death certificate for Grace FIFE BELL who was born 1 March 1849 probably in Lochee, Scotland, even though the death certificate spells it "Lauhee" Scotland.???? Her parents were Alexander Fife, b. in Scotland, and Janet Stewart, also born in Scotland. She died in Watertown, Jefferson County, N. Y. 10 July 1940. It is believed she came to Kingston, Ontario, Canada in the late 1860's or early 1870's. She married a John Bell from Dundee, Scotland, around 1871 in Montreal. I also found her called Grace FORBES in one of the statements made in her will, but her death certificate definitely shows her name to have been FIFE. One could theorize that her son was confusing the geographical FIFE with the family names -- but why would he call his grandfather Alex Fife????? Grace's husband, my great-grandfather, was of a "baking" family -- BELLS, of which there were probably many!!! ugh! I realize this is a very common name, but I thought I'd give it a try. Does anyone have a couple on their charts with these names/dates? I have no idea where to proceed with this search. Thank you for your help. Hi Catherine While my McArthur ancestors were indeed in Edinburgh in 1906 I rather suspect your photograph is not my McArthurs as the date puts it between generations. However it would be interesting to have a copy as I am still working on all Edinburgh McArthurs in the period. If someone else claims the photograph I would like to be in touch with him/her. I already have family photos for the period- McArthur family 1896 with children, 1910 - grown-up and 1914 just before the war: 1916 my great grandmother had a heart attack as a result of the zeppelin raid in which my mother then age 2 was showered with glass at her home in Nicolson Square. The youngest son died on the Somme in 1916. Jim McArthur
Hello, I am looking for information on Peter Hughes. He was born in 1866 in Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland. I received this info from the 1881 census. He has a half brother John Hughes who was born in 1862 and was in Pennsylvania by 1889. I believe Peter stayed in Edinburgh and owned a wine and spirits store. Any info on Peter or his family would be appreciated. Debbie Hughes
> Yes this paper does still exist and is available online at - www.edinburghnews.com > However for back copies, you would have to contact the, > Edinburgh Central Library, which hold back issues on microfilm, > but I don't know how far back they go. It goes back to the 1870's. I noticed that there were a lot of overseas death entries for in the Evening News and the Scotsman. A Scotsman entry provided a crucial confirming linkage between my ancestors and a fourth cousin's ancestors. Angi
Hi everybody, This is an off-topic posting which appears with the kind permission of the Listowner Do you have theatrical ancestors or have knowledge of them? Why not join the THEATRE-UK mailing list. How to subscribe. Send a message to THEATRE-UK-L-request@rootsweb.com or for Digest mode - THEATRE-UK-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command subscribe and no additional text. Researching family history can be difficult at the best of times. Researching ancestors who were actors, music hall performers etc. can be a real pain! They were never in one place for very long, they changed their names to suit themselves and very often they weren't particularly accurate about their age. This list is for the discussion of theatre history. The buildings, the troupes, the actors and players, the acts and the plays. With luck you might find the little snippet of information you need to track down your elusive ancestor, or maybe a list-member can provide you with some details of your ancestors career. Regards, Dave Jassie - List Administrator for the THEATRE-UK and the JASSIE surname lists.
That would of course be the Calton Jail, which was demolished between the wars to make way for St Andrews House. Edinburgh Prison then moved to Saughton. (My grandfather started work at Calton just after the First World War, then went on to become Steward at Saughton Jail.) There is a list for those with prison interests: prisons-uk-l-request@rootsweb.com and you might find someone with the knowledge you need. The National Archives of Scotland also have fairly complete registers of prisoners in the Calton between about 1798 and 1874, just in case your John Livingston was not what you hope he was!
