    3. hello Rena Upper Gilmore Place is still there. There are some older houses which would probably have been there at the time and from memory some tenements which would be a bit later. The street does a kind of dog leg from Viewforth to Gilmore Place, which I believe is named after the man who used to own the land. I remember seeing it on an old map as 'Mr Gilmour's feu'. To find it on a modern map locate 'Bruntsfield Links' and head westwards. On older maps, it is just south of the canal. YOu can see it on Alan Godfrey Map 'Merchiston, Bruntsfield and North Morningside'(Edinburgh sheet 3.11) which is a reproduction of a map dated 1896. These maps can be order from Amazon, amongst other places. 1. [EDB] Patersons (and others) in Edinburgh, 1881
    2. Rosalind Paterson
    3. Hello List, I tried to post this to the list a short while ago, but I'm not sure if it got through - so apologies if you've read it before. Here are three households containg Patersons, which I've recently extracted from the 1881 census; does anyone else have a connection with these Patersons ? First; - 28, India Street, Edinburgh St Stephens Alexr RAMAGE, 55, Teacher of literature, born Edinburgh Agnes RAMAGE, 60, sister, born Edinburgh Helen Paterson, 25, unmarried, General servant, born Uphall It is just possible that this Helen Paterson may be the daughter of the Robert Paterson (my husband's g-g-grandfather) and his wife Elisabeth (formerly GLEN). Robert and Elisabeth had a daughter Helen in Bathgate, W Lothian in 1852. In 1881, Robert and Elisabeth were living in Uphall. Does anyone else know anything about the Helen who was employed by the Ramages ? Second; - Kirknewton & E Calder, Edinburgh Peter Paterson, 24, Foreman quarryman, born Bathgate Margaret Paterson, wife, 21, born Whitburn, Linlithgowshire Robert Paterson, son, 3, born Whitburn Margaret Paterson, daughter, 1, born Kirknewton George WADDELL, brother-in-law, 41, Stone mason, born Whitburn Fanny WADDELL, sister-in-law, 34, Stone mason's wife, born Whitburn I believe that this Peter Paterson was the son of the Robert and Elisabeth Paterson mentioned above. Robert and Elisabeth also had a son named James, who is my husband's great-grandfather. Third; - Barton Villa, Hamlet of Northfield, Liberton, Edinburgh Jessie D R HARROWER, 57, Interest dividends, born Thurso George C HARROWER, son, 25, Chartered accountant, born Edinburgh William R HARROWER, son, 23, Insurance clerk, born Edinburgh Elizabeth G Paterson, servant, 20, General servant, born W Graig, Linlithgowshire I think that Elizabeth may be another child of Robert and Elisabeth; I think the G probably stood for Glen, but I can't find W Graig in Linlithgowshire - does anyone have any idea where this might be ? The Elisabeth Paterson I was looking for was born Torphichen, W Lothian. I look forward to hearing from you if you have any connection with the above households. Cheers, Rosalind Paterson. 3. St Stephens is Church of Scotland ie the established church. The Church of Scotland HQ is 121 George St Edinburgh tel 131 225 5722 fax 131 220 3113 you could write to the church elders/minister etc at Stephens Church, St Vincent Street Edinburgh and it would get there But the records are more likely to be either in the National Archives of Scotland or perhaps the National Library of Scotland..use google etc to find the National Register of Archives and search on there to find out If you look on one of the map sites you will see that St Stephens is at the bottom of St Vincent Street to the north of Princes Street and east of Stockbridge. Church of Scotland is presbyterian ie no bishops. good luck Judy > From: "Dale Mathieson" <geodale@bigpond.com> > Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 06:17:56 +0800 > To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [EDB] ST STEPHENS CHURCH > Resent-From: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com > Resent-Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 03:07:30 -0700 > > Please can someone tell me what denomination St Stephens Church would be? 3. Hello to the list, i am a new subscriber and I am trying to find some information on my gggrandfather - William Ronaldson PENDRICH c 1831 Edinburgh. He was the son of John PENDRICH c 1797 and Isabella 'Elizabeth' PATERSON c 1799. John and Isabella were married 16 May 1817 at the Canongate, Edinburgh. There children were: John 1818, Mary 1820, Barbara 1822, Thomas 1824, James 1829, and William Ronaldson 1831. William emmigrated to Australia prior to 1854. I do not know if he came with other family or on his own. On the 2nd January 1854 he married Emma Dewhurst WARD (b.c.1833 Nottingham, England) at the St Kilda licensed School Grounds, Melbourne, Victoria. Emma was the daughter of John WARD and Mary HIGHFIELD. Prior to his death in 1863 - William and Emma had the following Children: John Ward 1855, William 1857, Thomas 1859, Thomas 23 June 1861, Henry 1863. Emma remarried in 1864 to William HILL. Thomas PENDRICH (B. 23.6.1861) married Fanny "Annie" LANGFORD in 1887 at Wagga Wagga New South Wales Australia. Their children are found on the NSW BDM as follows: Alic Mae PENDRICH 1890; Ernest J "Barney" PENDRICK 1893; Clarice PENDRICK 1896; Charles W PENDRICK 1898; Lottie PENDRICK 1901 and Jack PENDRICK 1905. Jack is also registered under PENDRICH. I have made contact with some fellow PENDRICK's but no-one is able to tell me 1. why the name changed to PENDRICK 2. when the family arrived in Australia, 3.Where they arrived 4. Where they sailed from and did any other family come with them. I would like anyone on the list to contact me with any possible solutions to my queries. Thank you very much. 3. Ian Russell of Ontario asked: > Does anyone here know what church Rev. Nahum > Levison was minister of in Edinburgh? I am related by marriage to the late Rev Fred Levison, second son of Sir Leon Levison (1881-1936). Sir Leon's father was Rabbi Nahum, a distinguished Jew, and Leon's brother was the Rev Nahum Levison who became a Church of Scotland minister and theological scholar. I believe the Rev Nahum Levison died in 1968. I never knew either Sir Leon Levison or the Rev Nahum Levison, but I have before me as I write a biography of Sir Leon, entitled 'Christian and Jew, Leon Levison' which contains a great deal of information about both men. If Ian Russell is able to obtain the book (published in 1989), he may find the information he seeks. If he cannot find the information, perhaps I may be able to refer him to some of my Scottish relatives. Archdeacon Reg Nicholson in New Zealand reginaldn@clear.net.nz
