Hi List, Would any one by any chance be researching ANDREW MELVILLE who was a Brewer and was dead by 1837. He had a daughter, MARGARET who married JOHN STIRLING in 1837 in Edinburgh. She lived at 10 Duncan Street, Edinburgh ( I believe it is now Undonald Street). This is my "elusive" family so would be overjoyed if anyone is following this line. Regards Mary McKinlay from Tasmania
Is anyone aware of an index to the 1841, 1861 or 1871 census for St. Andrews, Edinburgh. I have found the family in 1851, 1881 and 1891 and looking for an easy way to tracking them down before I start plodding through several census films. This is a personal opinion. I do not think that names and addresses and telephone numbers of living persons should be put on any site. Especially also stating that they are quite elderly. Regards
in many cases the trade directories can fill the gap. If you post your ancestors name and occupation (and other known addresses) to the list someone might be able to find them for you. There ARE street indexes for all these censuses. Eg if you find a family in George St, the index tells you exactly which part of which film has the folios for that street. Hi, One of my ancestors was a Fireman in the Gorebridge area and I have been told that he could have been tending a furnace at a brickworks or may have been a safety officer in a mine. According to mu 1854 almanac the amount of fire insurance duty collected in Scotland the previous year was 68,658 pounds. Ten years later it was more than 124000 pounds. Someone more knowledgeable might correct me but I believe the insurance companies ran fire engines, and you would have their sign on your office or house so people knew which one to call and if you were paid up. Fires must have been very common in the crowded closes of the Old Town and water supplies were erratic - it took quite a while to arrange adequate supplies from the Pentland Hills. I have looked in mid century almanacs starting with 1838 when there was a Court of Police under which is listed a Master of Fire Engines and Billet Master, suggesting that there was a public force (paid or not) and that it was to some extent live-in. Later in the century the job is simply Master of Fire Engines. There is a Fire Engine Museum at Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, in one of the old fire stations. I took the tour a few years ago and was told they used to practice evacuating buildings using on their families who lived in special tenements to the rear. Hope this helps Judy > From: "Sue Adamson" <mosessue@tpg.com.au> > Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 11:15:40 +1000 > To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [EDB] FIREMEN > Resent-From: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com > Resent-Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 19:18:57 -0600 > > Dear Listers, > > l believe that an ancestor of my husbands [ James ADAMSON ]was a fireman in > Edinburgh c 1850. > > Does anyone know if there are any archives available for this profession and > whether the fire brigade of the time was a paying job or was it voluntary. > > Regards > Sue > > > ==== SCT-EDINBURGH Mailing List ==== > Need mail list help? Hi, I'm new to this list and I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a William McIntosh who married Jean/Jane McPherson in Edinburgh in 1834. I know they had 2 children one of them being my great great grandad Archibald who was born in 1835. And a daughter called Jessie or maybe Janet she would have been born around 1837. I know that both William and Jean/Jane were deceased by 1883 and that Archibald and Jessie/Janet were both living in Perth in 1881 as they are on the census. Archibald was my great great grandad. I don't suppose there are any kind souls out there who have access to the 1841 or the 1851 census and could do a look up for me please? I would like to find out if there were any other children in the family. I know that Archibald and Jessie/Janet were born in St Cuthberts, Midlothian, Maybe they stayed in the same area and had more children? The only other thing I know is that William's occupation was Police constable. If anyone can help me I would ever so grateful or if anyone has any of these people in their family trees, please get in touch, Thank you in advance for any help, Julie

Hi! I just got a death certificate for my great-great grandfather´s brother, Dewar Simpson, who died January 29, 1932 at the age of 79, and his place of residence is listed as 11 Maiden Craig Cresc, Blackhall, Edinburgh. His daughter-in-law, Annie Simpson, was the informant, and she lived at the same address. His place of death was 144 Comiston Road, Edinburgh. First of all, does anybody know where these roads are? Secondly, does anybody know how to try to find a marriage certificate for Dewar´s son and daughter-in-law, Annie, without a date but only knowing it was in Edinburgh. I know that Dewar had two sons, James M. Simpson and Robert W. Simpson, according to the 1891 census for South Leith, Edinburgh. James was born in 1885 or 1884 according to the census, and Robert was born in 1888 or 1887 according to the census. Their parents were, Dewar (as I mentioned above) and Janet MONTGOMERY. Dewar himself was born on December 23, 1852 in Bonnyrigg, Cockpen, Edinburgh, as were all of his siblings except the oldest and youngest, both of which were born in Gilmerton, Liberton, Edinburgh. Dewar´s parents were, by the way, James Simpson and Margaret Simpson. Yes, her maiden name was Simpson, as well as her married name. I know that I must have a sling of Simpson relatives in Edinburgh, but it would be really difficult and expensive to send letters to all the Simpsons in Edinburgh to try to find a link with today´s Simpsons. Any suggestions? Sincerely, Russell Lentz Tallahassee, Florida, U.S.A.
I just received a copy of the OPR from Dalkeith which lists the marriage of my ancestors, John GIBB & Janet HARDY in August 1804. John is identified as a soldier in the ---- Militia (can't read name of militia) and Janet is identified as being from the Parish of Cockpen. By 1811 they were in Leslie, Fife where daughter Jean was christened. They had 3 more children christened in Leslie: Thomas Hardy Gibb 1816 (my ancestor); James Gibb 1817; and Janet Lillburn Gibb 1819. Is anyone researching the HARDY family in Cockpen Parish around this time? Can someone tell me what militia was in Dalkeith about this time? LaVerne

Menzies Barron had a late father William Hairdresser of Edinburgh, he and a Marion? Rout? had nine children. How could I trace where he used to trade etc.. Any information would be welcome.
