    1. [EDB] CARSTARES
    2. Hello to all, I am a new subcriber so I thought I'd post my query. I wish to access a listing of the "mayors of Edinborough" with the surname CARSTARES in the time period of 1720-1790. Would anyone know where to find this info? Any websites? Here's why: As a young girl, my grmother would tell me that we were descended from Jenny Carstares who came to Canada and whose father had been the mayor of Edinborough. Well, the first part of grmother's story is not true... it was not Jenny Carstares who immigrated, but Janet Murray with her mother (circa 1790). And my research has been stuck there for a long, long time. Cannot link back to Scotland because I don't have the Murray father's name. So am now going to pursue the other part of the legend to see if I can prove/disprove the CARSTARES piece and work forward to see if it links with Murray. Thanks to all in advance for any assistance! Regards, Jane Jsherscott@aol.com

    3. On the subject of certificates. I find that part of the fascination of Genealogy, is finding originals, or be it copies of originals. I have had an original (copy) and a translated typed copy of an original. The translated copy missed out a small detail from the original and by my seeing this, it solved a mystery to a birth (it turned out that there had been a twin as suspected) but no hint was given in the typed copy but the original had stated "1st born" in very small writing. The "2nd twin" had died shortly after birth. Regards Rena McKenzie

    1. [EDB] Churches in Edinburgh
    2. Ann Carson
    3. As there is some knowledgeable discussion of Edinburgh churches on the list at the moment I wondered whether anyone could explain the following entries to me. They are in the St Cuthbert's register but relate to a different church it seems and are in the register many years after the original births and baptisms. Why would this be so? In the register of Births and Baptisms for St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Scotland for April 1831, under 11 April: "John Borthwick, Portrait Painter, Residing in Brown Street, and Isabella Chisholm, his Spouse, had a Daughter Born on 24th August 1823. Named May Chisholm. Baptized on the 28th September thereafter by the Reverend Dr James Hall, Minister of the United Associate Secession Congregation of Broughton Place. John Borthwick, Portrait Painter, Residing in Arthur Street, and Isabella Chisholm, his Spouse, had a Son Born on 11th July 1825. Named John Robert. Baptized on the Ninth October thereafter by the Reverend Dr James Hall, Minister of the United Associate Secession Congregation of Broughton Place." This is followed by an affidavit signed by John Borthwick and witnessed by Jas Patison JP. Has anyone else seen this before? And what was the "United Associate Secession Congregation of Broughton Place." 3. I will also be interested to hear if anyone can shed any light on this Secession Church. I have certificates from the Original Secession Church in Edinburgh Generations of my family belonged to it - I remember my aunt who died aged 104 told me they were very strict - not even cleaning your shoes on Sundays - all cooking had to be done on Saturday and nothing but going to church and bible reading at home all day on Sundays. 1. Re: [EDB] Tolbooth Church
    2. Alan Baillie
    3. Hi Steve The Tolbooth Church was in fact one of the three churches into which St Giles was at one time split - High Kirk, Old Kirk and Tolbooth Kirk, all in the same church building! St Giles is, of course, surrounded by the High Street on one side and Parliament Square on the other three. To give you an idea of the extent of the parish, I can do no better than to copy a mail kindly sent to me by Val Wilson some time ago - but I warn you, you'll need a map of Edinburgh and some aspirins! "Think of a box around the centre of Edinburgh. The northern edge is a line from about the foot of the Mound, eastwards through Princes Street gardens and Waverley Station to New Street. The eastern edge then runs down New Street, along the Canongate a small bit and then down St Johns Street. The Southern edge runs from the foot of St Johns street westwards along the Cowgate to the middle of the Grassmarket. The western edge then joins from the Grassmarket, along the top of Castlehill and Ramsay Gardens and eventually joins up with the Mound. Now, there is a centre line through this box that runs west-east from Johnston Terrace, down the Lawnmarket, the High Street and The Canongate. Looking at the area North of this line, the Tolbooth Parish is at the west edge and runs down as far as Bank Street. Next is High Church and it runs down to the North Bridge. Next is Trinity College and this goes down to New Street. Now looking to the South of the line, and starting at the west end again. The first is St Johns and it runs down to George IV bridge. Next is New North (or West St Giles) and it runs down to Hunter Square/Blair Street. Next is Tron Church which goes to about South Grays Close. Finally there is Old Church which runs down to St Johns Street." This Tolbooth Church is distinct from the Highland Tolbooth (formerly St John's, now the Edinburgh Festival HQ) at the top of the Lawnmarket, which used to be Free Church of Scotland (I believe the spire was deliberately made higher than that of any established church, to demonstrate the superiority of the Free Church, which came into being after the Disruption of 1843). Hope this is of some use. Alan

    3. I have a list of Edinburgh churches in 1838. the Tolbooth Church was in Parliament Square and the incumbent was James MARSHALL A.M. It was established church ie Church of Scotland. If you want to find out if you have the same William (or perhaps the second born to the same couple) then perhaps SKS could look for the family in the index to the 1851 census, Old Town volume. If you have an occupation for Daniel that would help to identify him. The index gives the place of birth of each family member. 3. I have traced the birth of my ggrandfather, William Campbell, back to Cramond 1831, and I am now hoping to obtain the names of his parents. I have discovered that, in Cramond on December 4, Daniel Campbell, married Helen Clephane. Thus the two events would appear to be connected. As a perusal of the 1841 census showed no Campbells whatsoever, it would appear that there were very few Campbells in the village which is another hopeful sign. Since then, my research has shown an entry for May 4th, 1836, stating that Daniel and Helen Campbell had their son, William Campbell, christened at the Tolbooth Church, Edinburgh. This is my problem. The only current reference to Tolbooth, which I have been able to find, has been a planning application dated 1998 to change the Highland Tolbooth Church Assembly Hall, Lawnmarket, to a Festival Hall. Can anyone tell me if the original building still exists, and what denomination it was? Are the parish records available? If I need to look at the 1841 census, which parish or area should I investigate, (assuming that they lived in the vicinity of the church)? This is a tall order. Any help or advice would be much appreciated Steve Morrison

    2. Jaguar
    3. With the kind permission of the list owners or administrators. This is a one time issuance of a warning. Listers: I have just downloaded my latest copy of PC-cillin's anti-virus pattern file #899. I downloaded the latest update of the filter *.vdx and the updated engine V4.5. WARNING: on my system, the engine V 4.5 will completely block out Netscape 4.7, in spite of settings to prevent this. This took three days of meticulously handling nearly 40K files to finally track the bug down which prevented all access to my browser but allowed mail through only sometimes. There is a javascript error and Netscape's java scripting functionality will be blocked, cold. PC-cillin blocks evil Active X and malicious Java files from entering your system. I have notified PC-cillin, but have heard nothing back yet. When the bug was found, I deleted the V 4.5 engine and accompanying filter and reinstalled my old copy V 4.3. All works perfectly as before. To correct: delete the entire PC-cillin program and reinstall from scratch. When it comes to the "Do you want to update" function, stop the install process and go on line to the address below and download manually, and install manually the updated pattern file only, not the updated engine. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2001 Alan Kemp Dempster, Ontario, Canada You are guaranteed honest advice and a person of Christian integrity. 2. J A Olsen
    3. For those interested in these locations I now have some pics. havent looked at them yet so they may not be all that brilliant and the camera is very basic - but it serves its purpose. As I thought there is not much left of Jamaica St (very near by) . I remember there being a gap site there years ago and now flats are built across the end of the short section of the street that remains. Anyone know any more? Is there something on the other side? Street numbers were 2 or 3, no sign of any higher numbers - I think the lister was interested in 60 someting. St Stephens is at the foot of St Vincent st and my pic should have the St Vincent St episcopalian chapel in the corner. St Stephens is a very fine Playfair building dated 1827 but I was horrified to find that the present church is just the former gallery. The congregation in their wisdom put in an extra floor converting the ground floor of the church into a church hall type affair with side rooms. Absolutely horrible and they spent at least 27 thousand quid at pre war prices. Judy >

    3. I have advertised for these people on the list in the past but with no luck. As I mentioned I found them on the 1851 and 1881 & 91 census so I have decided to try and follow them through on all the census. They were Catholic Apostolic so they aren't in the IGI and they had all their children before civil registation began in 1855 so I haven't had much luck there either.
