    3. Hi Dennis If would depend on what years you want for Scotland. If you want between 1855-1875 or the years 1881 or 1891 then you can get the full certificates on film from you local LDS family history centre. For the other years you will need to go through the Scottish GRO. I am not sure if there is another place but I am sure someone will fill you in on that. regards Sherylee Victoria, Australia http://unite.com.au/~u7317a/index.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Dennis Catley To: SCT-EDINBURGH-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, August 02, 2001 2:33 PM Subject: [EDB] B.D.M. 3. For England from 1st July 1837 you want The Family Records Centre which is a joint facility provided by the Public Record Office and the Office for National Statistics. PRO contact details: General family history enquiries (including census & wills) E-mail: enquiry@pro.gov.uk Internet: http://www.pro.gov.uk/ ONS contact details: Certificate enquiries (births, marriages and deaths) E-mail: certificate.services@ons.gov.uk Internet: www.ons.gov.uk Before 1/7/1837, if Church of England (bulk of population) then the appropriate County Archivist or Minister of the Church is the person to contact. If not Cof E, then the PRO holds the records of other denominations, so you enquire there. 3. Eureka! At last the world can know the truth. I have received from the GRO the extract for the marriage of the above, and this is what I read. On March 18, 1870, at Edge Hill Manse, Kilmarnock, William Campbell, nail maker, age 37, widower, was married to Bridget O'Neil age 32, widow of Henry O'Neil. William's parents were William Campbell, nail maker, and Jean Allan. Bridget's parents were either Peter McCann, or McCance, (it was difficult to read), and Bridget Ferguson. There are some discrepancies e.g. William's age should have been 39. This has probably been misread. I had a look at the LDS web-site and discovered that William Campbell and Jean Ferguson were married at St. Cuthbert's, Cramond, on December 19th, 1828. All of which seems to fit rather nicely. I further discovered that a William Campbell and Jean Ferguson were born in Falkirk in 1808 and 1812 respectively. Next week I hope to have look at the OPR of St. Cuthbert's to check on the 1828 marriage. If anything momentous turns up, I will keep you informed. Those of you who have been following the fascinating details of my family history will know what this posting is all about. Others who wantonly deleted previous postings, will just have to remain mystified. Once again I would like to express my thanks for the help I have received from this amiable list. Steve

    1. [EDB] Edinburgh Deaths 1820's
    2. Can anyone recommend a good method of checking for deaths for the 1820's in Edinburgh? My 4th great grandmother apparently died around 1826 in Edinburgh and not knowing how large this City was back then and what sort of records are retained from that era, I don't know where to start. Any advice is appreciated. Regards, Brett Prentice Brisbane, Australia

    3. Hi Brett Finding deaths in the old parish registers 1533-1854 are few and far between a lot of parishes didn't record deaths the few who did are vague scots origins does a free surname search just click this link http://www.scots-origins.com/SurnameSearch.asp I did a search on the surname Prentice with the following results Results showing the number of records with surname Prentice between 1553 and 1899 in each dataset: Scots Origins dataset No. of records Old Parish Record Births/Christenings (1553-1854) 1119 Old Parish Record Marriages (1553-1854) 730 Statutory Index Births (1855-1899) 2526 Statutory Index Marriages (1855-1899) 1018 Statutory Index Deaths (1855-1924) 1478 1891 Census 1881 Total 8752 and as you see there is nothing in the OPR for deaths you could try your local LDS family centre I have heard of an old Jewish man who used to go round the cemetery's recording the names from the stones and as far as I know the LDS has put it no to the computer there may be a CD with this information on it the Edinburgh FHC is below Edinburgh Scotland 30A Colinton Road Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland Phone: 131 337 3049 If you could give me all the info you have on her I will see what I can do from here. 3. Hello Judy, Allan, Charlie, et al. Re my efforts over the week-end to access the GRO in an attempt to discover the parents of my great-grandfather William Campbell. Those of you who have been following this saga with bated breath will be as delighted as I am to hear that my efforts have been crowned with some success. I have been able to confirm that William Campbell and Bridget O' Neil were married in Kilmarnock in 1870. My efforts as a novice to obtain this info. might be of interest to others. Not surprisingly, paying my £6.00 for 30 pages was not difficult. The difficulty for me was getting a result. Even when, as a trial, I fed in facts of events about which I already knew, I was unable to get a result. Probably I was doing everything wrong. Eventually. with three pages to go, I stumbled over a William Campbell's marriage in Kilmarnock 1870, but with no details of his spouse. So I turned it around and entered Bridget O' Neil for the same date. This time her spouse was included, and it turned out to be the elusive William. As it seemed fairly certain that these two were my great-grandparents, I have ordered an extract for £10.00 which I hope will give me details of their parents. What a nail-biter! I estimate the cost of obtaining this information at about £20.00 i.e. £16.00 to the GRO, plus 'phone charges. When I receive the extract, I will post the results. Steve
