    1. [EDB] What to do next: Thanks to all.
    2. Kay and Greg Blackburn
    3. Hello list. Thank you all of you who respond to my latest posting. I now have some good ideas to work on and a few kind souls have offered to do a little fossicking around for me in the readily available records. This is very hearten and very much appreciated. Each of you will soon receive a personal reply to answer your questions The male line being researched is Cleghorn, with the attached female lines. We have some records of the family going back to 1737 for the marriage of Thomas Cleghorn and Jean Broun in Drumelzier Peebles. (We don't have any information about Jean yet) It looks like there was a movement of the family in the 1780/90s, and we are now trying to figure out where they all went. Some we know went to other parishes in Peebles others to Edinburgh and later on to the Americas. Later in the 1890s several from Peebles ended up in New Zealand and we suspect others went to Australia. At the moment there are too many gaps in our records to bring all of the data into one family tree. So once again thank to all the kind people who have shared there thoughts with us. Regards Greg in Raumati New Zealand

    1. [EDB] LEITCH, MASON, AI(T)KENHEAD
    2. Steve Nethercote
    3. Does anyone know of Isabella MASON b abt 1828? Or her father, Samson MASON, or her husband, George LEITCH She married George LEITCH at St Cuthberts in 1852. The marriage record says her father was the late Samson Mason of Causewayside, Edinburgh, Scotland. I have looked at the 1841 & 1851 census’, but have not found them. George & Isabella emigrated to Australia in late 1852. George was the son of Andrew & Isabella LEITCH. I guess they were from Edinburgh, but I don’t know. At some point there should be a connection to Kincardine, possibly Marykirk. Records say that Isabella was related to the AIKENHEAD family in Marykirk. Regards Steve Nethercote Melbourne, Australia

    3. Beth: Black, in "The Surnames of Scotland," shows the two names as quite distinct. On the other hand, he mentions the "clan Teir [McIntyre]." I would suggest you use the IGI as a source of clues, but don't put a lot of trust in the data. I've seen some whopping errors in it. 1. [EDB] Georeg WILLISON (1741-1797) - Portrait Painter
    2. George Willison made a mint as a portraitist in India and London, and retired with the swag to live in Edinburgh. Willison died in April 1797, aged 56, and was buried in Cannongate Kirkyard, having spent the last thirteen or so years of his life painting in his native city. He is said to have had a daughter, Mariann, who married Lt Col Charles MACQUARIE of the Mull family and had by him five children before she died in September 1828. My questions are: Who did George Willison marry, and when & where? Where and when was Mariann born? Did Mariann have any siblings - and if so, what were there vital details? Regards Don Montague

    2. Battunga
    3. I am new to the list. My particular interest is that my gg grandparents, John & Elizabeth DONALD were living in Edinburgh from about 1859-68. He was a sergeant in the Royal Artillery. It is believed he was a warden in the military prison there. Their daughter, Minnie Donald was born in 1866-7. Could someone please suggest how this info could be confirmed. For instance, if the 1861 Census is indexed, how could this be referenced. Rhoda Oz

    1. [EDB] Rutherford Family
    2. Brian & Dianne Dixon
    3. Hello Listers, I am new to this list and I am currently researching the following family. James Rutherford born 16.7.1837, Galashiels married 16.4.1861 Edinburgh to Susannah Boyd. They are my Great, Great Grandparents. They had 8 children. They were Robert, George (my great grandfather), Susannah, John, betsy Allison, James Oliver, Mary Jane and Oliver. James Rutherford moved to Edinburgh before the 1861 census along with his parents Robert Rutherford and Elisabeth Oliver, and 3 of his brothers , John, George and Oliver and his sister Helen. They were all married in Edinburgh. John married Isabella Sinclair, there were 9 chidren. George married Gloriannah Stirling Aitchison, no children. Oliver married Mary Marston, no children. Oliver was a lawyer in Edinburgh. Helen married John Fenwick Buchanan and I only know of 2 children at this time. My 2x Great grandfather James died 26.9.1877 Edinburgh and his wife Susannah died 19.6.1915 South Leith. James's 2 older brothers remained in Roxburghshire. Robert born 4.1.1829 Maxton married Margaret Storie, there were 9 children . Thomas was born 16.8.1830 Maxton, he is proving to be difficult to find. Is there anyone out there who is researching these families or are there any descendants still living in Edinburgh. James's son George came out to New Zealand circa 1889 and settled here in Lyttelton, New Zealand after his marriage to Margaret McDougall in 1891. Regards Dianne Dixon, Christchurch, New Zealand.

    1. [EDB] BORTHWICK One Name Study
    2. Ann Carson
    3. Dear Listers I have been researching my own BORTHWICK family for a few years now but recently had a moment of great madness and registered to do a One Name Study! Hence this message to all the areas where I believe there are BORTHWICKS, with apologies for duplications to those on multiple lists. I have a Borthwick site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~anncarson/ where, aside from information about my own family, I am posting all the Borthwick information I have collected and have been generously given by others - mostly email friends I have met via these Rootsweb lists. I would love to hear from anyone on these lists with a BORTHWICK in their family. I would also be grateful for any BORTHWICK information at all that people are willing to share with other researchers by posting it. There is a site map but if it is too time-consuming to look through my site to see what is missing (heaps!) I would be happy to tell you by email whether I do or don't have any information you may be able to share. Many thanks are due to listers for their help with information that I've posted on the site. In particular I'd like to thank Jane Kelly, Richard Keltie, Judy Olsen, Graechen, Meg Greenwood, Allan Mitchell, Pam Hamlyn, Allan Steel and Maurice French but so many other generous people have helped in various ways and for every bit of information I am extremely grateful. Gradually the emails are now coming in from BORTHWICK descendants who have found their ancestors somewhere on my site - just what makes it all worthwhile! Best wishes to all Ann Carson (Sydney, Australia) annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au Researching in Scotland (1700-1850s - all over Scotland, but for my own family Lanarkshire, Dumfriesshire, Midlothian, Peeblesshire, Stirling): ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ B O R T H W I C K (descendants of John Borthwick & Elizabeth Dinwoodie of Kirkpatrick Juxta, Moffat, Tweedsmuir, Drumelzier, Biggar) B R O W N (Robert & Jessie, m.
