Is anyone on the list familiar with the following 1998 publication of the Scottish Association of Family History Societies that I found in the Allen County (IN) Public Library online catalog? "Scottish Census Indexes: Covering the 1841- 1871 Civil Censuses," compiled by Peter Ruthven-Murray. I live two hours away and would be interested in knowing whether I should look forward to seeing it! Harold Henderson, hs@niia.net on the lookout for HENDERSON, THRALL, SCHOLES, BASSETT, BORING/ANDERSON, SCHRIBER, DAVIDSON, STENBERG, FLINT, JOSS, JAMES, & more
If anyone has the answer to Bruce's question about where to obtain the 1851 census, would they please put their answer on the List for all to see. I have a Sutherland family in Trinity College Parish and would dearly like to find out more about them to overcome my brickwall. Many thanks Deborah
Hello, I am looking for information on Peter Spittal b. c1876, possibly Edinburgh or Stirling. There is a Peter in the 1881 census born in 1877. I don't know if this is the right Peter, so any further information on this Peter would be most helpful. Also, my Peter Spittal had a son named Peter Wilson Spittal b. 1900. Family lore holds that Wilson is a family name. I think it might possibly be the maiden name of Peter's (the senior) mother. Only a guess, unfortunately. Thanks to all and have a great day. Judy Thankyou for that run down on the Edinburgh censuses. So how do I get hold of the 1851 indexed census? I have Robert and Mary HOGG (married about 1848) and living at "19 Salisbury St in the District of Holyrood and Canongate in the Burgh of Edinburgh" according to their daughter Anne Veary HOGGs birth certificate. They arrived in New Zealand in December 1858 with 5 children, so I would love to find the 1851 census entry to find out who the other 4 were! Can someone who has access to it do a look up for me, or tell me how to get hold of it? Thanks Bruce Simons Melbourne, Oz
Thanking you in advance. I am going to give you the lot and hope that you can fit your interests to whatever you feel appropriate. At each step of the Dempster line, past my father, I have not found siblings for any of the Dempsters. I am working up the DEMPSTER line but with effort being spent to gather the mates and siblings along with associated dates and notes, as available. I am only going two deep...i.e., the mate and their parents and siblings. Canada: Gen 1. Alan Kemp Dempster [me] Gen 2. James Kemp Dempster [my father] Scotland: Gen 3. Lauchlan John Dempster [January 23, 1887] m. Gen 4. Lauchlan John Dempster [July 31, 1863] m. Georgina Mills [May 09, 1867][George Mills + Margaret MacKay (nothing of her background known) December 07, 1884...no location except Portobello, may have been St. Cuthberts as above. Gen 5. Hi to add to the previous email on my request for a look up on Peter Dewar, "I understand there is a cross referencing system in this index so if someone can do the lookup I would be grateful if they would check the household code to see if there are any inlaws etc in the Dewar household on census night." Thanks Christine

HI, I want to thank Judy for all the wonderful information on census for Edinburgh. I am brand new to research in Scotland. I live in the US and just recently got some information on my ancestors from Edinburgh.. I am asking if there might be a volunteer on the list that could do a surname look up for me for the 1851 census..If so it would be greatly appreciated..Thank you kindly, Christine. (Researching Dewar, Morrison, and Kay surnames).
Hi Listers, I'm new to the list and would appreciate any help whatsoever, I'm researching my Great Grandparents, John MARTIN(Portree) and Andrina EDWARDSON(Unst), they were married in Leith where John was a coachman at the Royal Oak Hotel. Their children were, Andrew, who was a skipper on a ship named 'Freea', Angus my Grandfather, Journeyman Joiner, he laid some of the floors at Hollyrood Palace, James, William and Margaret. Angus was born in 1896, I don't know about his siblings, do any of these names ring a bell with anyone. Any information gratefully received. TIA, Liz
Edinburgh censuses are available for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891. There are no surname indexes that I know of for 1841, 61 or 71, but there is a street index which tells you which film you need for a particular address. The 1851 has a fantastic, cross referenced index which is *almost* as good as the film - but the snag is that is doesnt cover all of what is now known as Edinburgh. The four volumes are Old Town, Canongate and New Town (2 vols). This index is available in the Central Library in Edinburgh and a couple of other places. The 1881 census is of course indexed on the discs available from the LDS. The 1891 census index is available at the Edinburgh Central Library and online at Scots Origins. Apparently you can now get a 'screen shot' of the record from Scots Origins. What this means in practice is that to look up someone 'in Edinburgh' in 1841,61 or 71 without an address would take weeks of work. Likewise surname trawls. Even if someone did the lookup, your lot might have gone to Glasgow for the weekend, and you might get the wrong family! In the case of the 51 census, you might get a match, but you have to remember that the census doesnt cover eg Leith, so you could get a false positive. But that is not entirely the end of the story. There is a 'work round'. Edinburgh has post office directories that start from the late 19thC.So does Leith. Depending on occupation your ancestor may be included, so you then have an address to check in the census. This is assuming you dont have a 'suitable' christening or other record to supply an address. As a final point, please remember that "Edinburgh" sometimes refers to 'Edinburghshire" so if you dont know the city you may want to ask the list where a place really was. Your ancestors might have been 'out of town', and that would narrow down your search to a smaller community. Please note, this is not an offer to do lookups. I am posting this information to help those who have recently asked for lookups and are wondering why no one responded. Judy
Would some one be so kind as to do a lookup to see whether you can find Helen MCINTYRE nee Bowie with her son Joseph on the 1861 census of Edinburgh? Her parents lived in Ormiston, so don't know whether she would have gone to live with them after 1859 when her husband Finlay McIntyre died in March. Any help would be appreciated. Hi, Dianne, Judging by your information, I think it more than likely that you have two families: maybe cousins marrying sisters or even cousins. If the first ones have followed the traditional naming pattern, then Christian's mother will be Margaret and Alexander's Janet. Looking at the ages of the children, Christian & Catherine couln't possibly be the same person but Alexander's father could certainly be William.
